Garry 1 Posted March 11, 2006 Having looked into the various options for modifying the rear beam I have a few questions. As far as I can tell there are 5 main items that will change the charactistics of the rear suspension, (plus of course its general condition): 1) Shock absorbers 2) Anti roll bar 3) Torsion bars 4) Track width 5) Mountings and bushes What I would like to know is the consequence of uprating each component, for instance I know that uprating the ARB will reduce roll and increase turn in, but will it affect the ride? If I were to uprate the rear shocks only, would there be any benefit to the roll resistance? I am not too sure what the the torsion bars do apart from resist a twisting force, maybe from one wheel to the other? I know its a big question but feel it may help the less technical people (like me ) understand whats going on back there and help plan future upgrades. It seems the ultimate beam for track use would be uprated everything, but what if I just got a thicker ARB and shocks like CW has and left the torsion bars, would it be roll resistant but still quite supple? If I just uprate the shocks will the ride be stiffened but body roll remain the same? I am just trying to suss out what does what Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Guest smokinslim Posted March 13, 2006 Uprating the ARB made a much greater difference to body roll than just uprating the shocks, in my experience. Before the thicker ARB and still at standard ride height the back end was still rather boat like. That was going from a 16mm to a 19mm ARB, which you Gti should have anyway. An aftermarket ARB larger than 19mm may cost you as much as a good suspension setup though. A thorough search on here of all the different aspects of suspension will probably through up a good few hours of useful reading on the subject. Hope this helps anyway.
