Phil 0 Posted March 9, 2006 Took my 205 for the MOT today (having done 10 miles since the last MOT when it was fine) and when testing the rear brakes the N/S flickered a bit of pressure then died altogether. The other side worked but wasn't the most powerful in the world. No matter how much I pumped it I couldn't get it to register a single bit! (non ABS car BTW) Would having GTi-6 calipers on the front with standard master cylinder cause these issues? (I have the 406 master cylinder ready to fit but am going to do a complete overhaul with new lines/bias valve in the next month) I'm not sure this is the problem as the pedal wasn't hitting the floor so it should have all been pressurised throughout. I am running the compensators still (again, until I do the work mentioned above) so maybe they have siezed? Is this common? Can they be overhauled if so? Also one of the guys said there is a specific way to setting the calipers up and mentioned something of the lines of remove handbrake cables, draw back handbrake arm on caliper completely, wind back piston, refit and pump brake before re-attaching handbrake cable. Have I got that right? Does it sound familiar as its not something i've heard before! I want to get the car MOTd before I do the rest of the brake upgrades so i'm looking for an easy and cheap fix! Anthony 1,003 Posted March 9, 2006 Sounds to me like a failed compensator is the most likely culprit. Easy way to verify is to open the bleed nipple on the caliper that's not doing anything and see if much fluid comes through when you pump the brake peddle - chances are that you'll have little more than a trickle. Phil 0 Posted March 9, 2006 That was my thought as well, can you rebuild them in any way? Or remove the internals to bypass it? (Only needs to work for a week or so as my Wilwood bias valve is in the post!)

(Only needs to work for a week or so as my Wilwood bias valve is in the post!) They're sealed items as far as I know, but as an MOT quick fix, I'm sure that drilling straight through the middle lengthways so it's a glorified straight through pipe would work OK - should work just fine as I run GTi-6 brakes with no compensators at all (although you'd want to do both sides if you were going to keep it as it stood, as otherwise you'd have uneven rear brakes under hard braking).
