Converting Fwd Mi Engine To 4x4

Recommended Posts

felix2566

i was wondering after reading a topic where a 4x4 block had to have extra holes tapped to accept a mount, can the 4x4 gear box and transfer box bolt straight onto the fwd MI engine or will it need modifying? also does any one have any diagrams or pictures of the front 4x4 layout?

yep...can be done...only one mountingpoint of the rear enginemount needs to be modified (grind down).

I could get you a picture of the area Hilgie mentions if it would help. I have a x4 block, but it's not in the car, so can't help you on how it all goes together.

Andy,

I think it is metal off a 2wd Mi block to put it in a 4x4, but metal on to put a 4bie into a 2wd / 205. I know my brother ground a mount of the block to fit a 2wd Mi into that Dimma 309

Ooops, I forgot about this :) I'll get that picture today for you.

Yes that's right.

There was a topic recently by Higie where he supplied drawings of an adapter to mate the 2WD lower mount to the X4 block. Basically a spacer to fill in the gap between the fourth hole (top left, looking from drivers seat) and block.

Here's a pic of the mount, showing the hole I mean.

What I meant was, I'm not sure whereabouts the transfer box fits, and whether it uses this fourth hole as a mounting or not :D

Yes it fits. And yes the 4x4 lower enginemount uses the fourth hole, but the enginemount is slightly different so you'd have to take a small amount of the block.

Where as if you are putting a 4x4 engine into a 205 you'd need to fabricate a small spacer to be able to put the normal rear enginemount on the block.
