Guest Quakes Posted March 5, 2006 Im guessing i have wired a live feed straight to the starter motor but im sure its how the wiring was before really need help before tommorow and the search just seems to show people having the opposite problem lol the main terminal on the solenoid is connected to the loom wire that also runs to the alternator and the small terminal below it is connected to a red cable which i think leads to the battery but im sure that cable is right because i accidently bared it and its plug was still sitting on the terminal any idea what i could of done The key wasnt in the ignition so its not a sticking barrel problem :/ Cheers for looking Jono
mbayley77 0 Posted March 5, 2006 The solenoid should be switched through the ignition switch. believe off the top of my head its wire 46 - Blue wire coming from the brown multiplug on top of the gearbox. This should go to the spade connector of the solenoid. Sounds like you say you have connected the starter system to permanent live. Is just the starter spinning over or is it the solenoid as well - so the engine tries to turn over constantly?
Guest Quakes Posted March 5, 2006 Its turning the engine over im sure that red wire is right tho :/ as i bared it trying to remove it
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 6, 2006 The red wire can only be fitted to one obvious place imo, The ring terminal won't fit the solenoid terminal. It can be fitted to another terminal on the starter iirc but if you removed the wires then the other possible place shoud still have been tightend up & noticably wrong. Mbayley is right with the only other wire connected to the starter is switched by the ignition barrel. Graham.
Guest Quakes Posted March 6, 2006 ill try to explain it the starter motor is just 1 big barrel i noticed on my other car it was two parts. theres two terminals on it one a big one with a big black wire connected to it and the other a small one just below it with a red wire connected to it the haines dosent show anything about it :/
M3Evo 0 Posted March 6, 2006 I've had a solenoid weld itself on before so the starter wouldn't stop Might be worth checking that?
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 6, 2006 Starter should be two cylindrical bodies joined in a piggy back style. See attached photo for what colour wire goes where. Red is main battery feed & Blue is ignition switched solenoid wire. Graham.
Anthony 1,003 Posted March 6, 2006 That is possibly the grottiest looking starter motor ever there Graham!
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 6, 2006 That is possibly the grottiest looking starter motor ever there Graham! Its an old spare, not even sure if it works. Perfectly suitable for this use though. Graham.
Guest Quakes Posted March 6, 2006 yep thats how my wiring is :/ still when i connect the battery it just keeps turning the engine over grrr i really should of put it in a garage lol
Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted March 6, 2006 pull the red wire off the solenoid and check it for voltage, if its stuck at +12v with ignition off then its the wiring at fault, if its not then its the starter at fault.
Guest Quakes Posted March 6, 2006 cheers will do that tommorow im guessing its the wiring tho as i didnt label it :/ any idea main points of wiring i could of got wrong? or just a case of tracing the wire. Cheers Jono
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted March 7, 2006 pull the red wire off the solenoid and check it for voltage, if its stuck at +12v with ignition off then its the wiring at faultThe red wire with the ring terminal should have 12v's all the time because it comes directly from the battery & then goes on to the alternator. If the blue wire with the spade connector has 12v's with the ignition switched off then you have a wiring or ignition barrel fault. If you have a red wire to the solenoid with a spade connector it should be connected to the Alternator & should have 12v's constantly with the ignition switched to on & you've cross connected the blue wire mean't for the solenoid to the alternator possibly. Graham.
Guest Quakes Posted March 7, 2006 that sounds most likely cheers pugtorque if i dont get it sorted tommorow i will post a photo lol tis annoying me now Cheers Guys ( as usual ) Jono
Richie-Van-GTi 74 2 Cars Posted March 7, 2006 LOL, glad pugtorque mentioned that about the wires colour asmine are blue and thought mine might be worng with yours being red!!
Guest Quakes Posted March 10, 2006 Feeling kinda stupid tightened up the main terminal with the inlet manifold only slightly up so didnt realise it was turning as i tightened and shorted to the other terminal still cant believe i changed an engine anyone can if i can
