Did Any Of The Xu Engines Come Prefitted With Knock Sensors

Hi All.

 

Did any of the XU engines come prefitted with knock sensors?

If so, where was thay fitted?

 

And if not where would be the best place to tap a bolt hole for one, and I want to add one to my engine for my MegaSquirt-II

 

I have been reading up about knock sensors, and it seems there is right and wrong places to fit them, and also the knock sensor also very.

yea, i was looking to this a few weeks ago for the same reasons, when I actally get my MS

 

Do a search, there are a few post detailing what your looking for, but basically they fitted them on the lower starter motor mount (mid engine). Personally I'd mount on the higher one, but i'm sure Pug knew what they were doing!

If you mount them too high you get head noise setting the sensor off. Also looking at the engine block I can see no other place to mount the sensor without welding a block on specifally for mounting the sensor.

on the 1.9 mi16 a stud with a thread screws into the middle main bearing cap through the block, the knock sensor bolts onto the end of the stud.

XU9J4 405 Mi16s from 1991 onwards had knock sensor.

Also found on the XU10 8 valve engines, I removed one from a ZX with the loom & 8P ecu for TT205.

Thats really low down compared to the xu10j4 which is central on the block but level with the top of the alternator. Nowhere near the oil cooler. It also has a lead going away from the knock sensor.

I'm sure the pic's i saw had it connected to the next bolt whole along.

 

Anyway while we're all talking knock sensors, does anyone know what torque they need to be done up with?

 

(I just have a couple of sensors knocking around...... )

The stud into the #3 cap is still done up to 25Nm, but the nut only needs to be tight, say 10-12Nm.

 

Knock sensors are found on any XU9J4Z, from '89 on.
