1.9 Or 2.0 Mi Or Even Gti6 Into 205? (searched!)

Recommended Posts

Baz

Probably been covered before but i've been searching over the last few days for hours and the only similar question found in a thread wasn't answered!

Basically i want to know, as it says above, what are the differences, benefits and drawbacks of fitting each, into a 205, i've researched it for a couple of years now and always come to the conclusion the alloy block'd lighter 1.9 is the way to go, but after being on here people seem to have different opinions and some would say the heavier 2.0, (s16? -only by about 15kilos?) and some say GTi6, although is too tall? Are the management systems all different too?

It's all got me really confused now, as always thought the extra weight would upset the front of a 205s balance. ;) Also, what's the main differences between them, apart from the obvious like displacement, inlet manifolds etc. Is there any extra hardship in fitting one than t'other? I've read somewhere on here that you can use the 2.0 manifold in a 205 without modifying mani or bulkhead etc, although amount of bolts and placing is different so surely not. Is it all just opinions or what?!

;) Sorry i know there's alot to answer here but i'm very lost after thinking i had it sorted!

im going to be doing a conversion soon aswell and id prefer to go down the gti-6 route since the engines are alot younger and much less likely to need a rebuild (which most mi16's seem to need by the looks of it)

the mi16 seems the easiest conversion tho from what ive read, just drop it in and wire it up by the sounds of it. ur also more likely to find a cheap mi16 compared to a gti6 which will prob be £200-£300 dearer id have thought, but thats not factoring in a rebuild. not sure how much a rebuild is but can imagine it being over £500

dont think the power difference between em is much really. if it is then 5to10bhp or so isnt gonna make a huge difference anyways

would be interesting to hear opinions from people who have done all the conversions......

They all fit and they are all relatively easy to install. Unless you intend on racing or are obsessed with lap times on trackdays, I would go for whatever engine you can find that is in the best condition (low mileage, recent rebuild, receipts for work/parts etc).

gti6 eats cambelts for fun but doesn't suffer oil surge.

2ltr mi has a stupid inlet manifold

1.9mi has s*it management and is old now.

Controversial but Seuss fair sums it.

If it was me? gti6 :)

will the MI16 1.9 still the easiest way since you can get plenty of conversion parts off the shelf?

will the EW10J4 (206GTi) and EW10J4RS (206RC 180) be considered as well? also, the EW12J4 seems to be a good try. their crankshalfs weight a lot less than the MI last ime i saw/weight them. but they will probably cost a fortune, at least a custom make manifold.

It seems to me that all of the 16V variants offer similar outcomes at differing cost costs. There are other options that could be considered aswell such as a modified 8V or Turbo conversion. Then the question widens in terms of what type of power delivery and tractability you are after.

Tough call. Motronic 1.3 (with knock and lamba sensors) is very good.

the engines from the 206 gti variants will fit but would take such alot of modification to get them in it would just be easier to do the mi/gti6 conversion both of which are more tuneable :)

Had a 306 S16 engine in my 205 but have now converted it to a 306 GTi-6/rallye. This engine seems the best for me as it seems to pull alot stonger and more smoothly, the S16 engine seemed a bit flat under 3000rpm until the complicated second inlet system opened and then it went well. You could feel the point they opened and it wasnt smooth. The GTi-6 one pulls great all the way to the red line so that gets my vote.

I agree. The only problem is that the connectors can be easily damdged and make poor connections whoch in turn gives you problems.... this is the issue I have at the moment.....
