Load Whine From Drivers Side Front?

Recommended Posts

Guest Nathanlgd

just a quicky, my front drivers side wheel is squeeling/whining like mad! I originaly thought it was the drive shaft but a few friends are convinced its the wheels bearing. Any ideas as to what its most likely to be and how dangerous is it to drive on? It was making the noise for a few days and I haven't driven it now for about 2 weeks. You cant hear the noise at all with the foot down and like wise when the cars flat cold - it seems to take a few minutes to warm up til you can hear it.

Cheers

Is it only happening when the car is being driven or even with the car idling?

Is this with the 1.9 GTi hubs you got recently fitted?

If its a wheel bearing, I'd replace it sooner rather than later. I know one person that had a Mk2 golf & his wheel bearing started making noises but he left it until the car couldn't be driven anymore & it cost him a replacement hub due to the damage it caused. :)

when the bearing went on my saxo it was more of a grinding sound than a squeeling. does it sound louder when u corner? if it does then its prob the bearing, mine sounded lethal going round right handers but was silent going round lefties

Of course its silent when idling! ;) I'm not that dumb :) and yes!! when I turn right its louder, often when turing left its silent - and it is a sort of grinding sound. Sounds like the wheel bearing.

I havent yet fitted any of the 1.9 stuff so this is on my old 1.6 running gear.

Jack the front end up and rock the wheel from top to bottom and see if there is any play.

I asked this incase it was a cambelt tensioner making the noise.

I know mate ;) its just I wouldn't have dreamed of suggestion it was part of the running gear if the noise was present whilst stationary ;)
