Rear Engine

Recommended Posts

Guest leegt

hello all, at the minute i am converting a humble citreon ax in to a rear engine with a 205 gti (1.9) being used. was wondering if i should stick with this or alternatively stick in the 2 litre 8 valve turbo engine out of a 406 sri. maybe put in some forged pistons and a bigger turbo. what you lot reckon? 1.9 or turbo? cheers lee

Why not a v6?

They go for £200-£400 and probably lighter than the iron block 2.0 turbo.

If you were planning to fit forged pistons and a bigger turbo you will need management and larger injectors. This would set you back a couple of grand or more

So spend you money wisely get a v6 running with full management for under a grand (200 bhp with ease) and get some fat rims for the rear.

I really doubt the Ax would handle any more than 200bhp unless you space frame the rear.

If you need any encouragement have a look at our on going thread

There is a v6 going on E-bay at the moment (everything you need)

Here are some reasons for the v6 implant

1. Gear linkages etc are a piece of piss with cables

2. Coolant union position on block cant be in a better place when you fit radiator in the front and use exhaust tunnel for hose/piping

3. 500+ bhp possible with v6

4. V6 induction noise

5. V6 sits further forward for better weight disputation

6. Monster driveshafts and clutch as standard

7. 155 mph + gearbox

8. Huge disks and callipers (brembos) as standard

Forgive my ignorance, but is the 2.0l block cast iron? If so, i'd go with the XU.. for reasons of mass and position of that mass alone.

with the 2.0l lump, you talk of replacing a turbo that you already have and a set of pistons, why not channel that cash into the xu.. perhaps you can turbo that..?

Just read Martins post, he's making a lot of sense there..

The 2.0 lump is an XU series engine as well... Do some searches on here for Turbo conversions on the 1.9 alloy engine, a la the 205 TT, a few people such as Saveloy have that engine...

If you are going to the trouble of building a midengined car, it is no more difficult to install a V6 than a straight 4 as you are scartch building the thing anyway... Just use whatever the best condition engine you can get your hands on... The V6 sounds nice though!

The car is likely to be light, maybe a bike engine would be even easier, being that you get a gearbox free and it is so much more compact...?

reason i'm going for this engine is because i;m having the whole car for £100 so with what i save on this i can get some forged pistons and up the boost, was going with a standalone management system anyway regardless of the engine so thats in the budget. i agree that the v6 does sound good (to be honest didnt realise they were so cheap) but also doesnt a turbo going full chat with a big waste gate on sound good? i was sort of going down the early 90's supertourismo ax look, thats why i was staying with the turbo but now you've mentioned the v6......................
