Car Is Stuck At Motorway Services

Recommended Posts

:( just been on a uni pool event and i was taking 3 others in my car.

Right at first i had a puncture on pas rear, so i changed that and notices the car looked a bit low, hmm thought might be coz i been jakin it up. so off i went for some Premium at the station and then off onto the A52. Just as i got on i start hearing this rubbin noise from pas rear, so i pulled over and OMFG the tyre is rubbing against the grey arch trim and the bumper. Argh, so i thought i have 2 fatties in the rear, so a quick phone call and i have 2 guys who are 9 stone in the back. All going well and i hear no rubbing. 20 mins later i hear some squeaking, hmm better stop and have a look. Yup its still rubbing. Car was allright on the way up with 4 in it, so something has gone pete tong.

Any one got any ideas, just rubbing on one side.

when no one is in the car i can just get my fingers between the tyre and trim/bumper.

Thank god my dad is a helpfull guy, hes gonna drive for 6 hrs to trailer my car home later today, He is a saint!!

Maybe you've lost the passenger side rear bumpstop?

Is the wheel cambered at all? the bearing may have collapsed.

Take the trim off, drive home gently.

Yea, if its rubbing only lightly I'd just pull the trim off and ask the 2 rear passengers to sit on the other side of the car!

Dad just just gave me a ring, and hes loaded the car.

Thw rubbing wasnt that light, but it looks like the trim/bumper may be closer to the wheel than on the other side, perhaps some one has bumped into the car?????

But it happned right after i jacked the thing up to change the tyre.

Had a look at the tyre i took off (Yoko A539) and there was no sign of wear on it even tho the car had 4 in it the whole way up.

So im currently carless and owing my dad a massive one for the trailering away.

It does sound like a bump as 205 beams don't tend to move backwards on their own instantly.

The tyre you put on may have been over inflated / have greater tread depth on too, if it was on the same side as the rubbing

If it started after you jacked the car up then it begs the question where did you place the jack and is it possible you've bent something?

Also could the new wheel and tyre be the wrong size or offset?

The tyre was on the car before i had 2 new ones on the rear, on the same side and all. both tyres same size, the spare possibly with slightly less tread than the other. But no signs of wear on the one i got a puncture.

Placed jack on the jack point so i dont see how i could have bent anything.

How exactly does the torsion thingy work on the rear, is it possible for one side to fail or would that effect both sides??

Also could it be a shock or dampner???

Sounds to me like the rear suspension bearings have completely failed on one side - perhaps the additional loads caused by a punture at motorway speeds has dislodged what was left of the outer bearing allowing the shaft to sit higher and further back in the beam tube.

I don't think a damper would casue the problem - and if all the splines were stripped on one of the torsion bars the affected side would be right down on the bump stop which doesn't sound like yours.

Either way I'd go to the search function on the board and look for "rear beam"!

If the bearings fail it tends to induce negatrive camber which means arch trim clearance increases but it starts rubbing on the metal of the inner arch.

If the torsion bars start to work loose and the trailing arm comes out with it (unlikely) this might bring it closer to the arch trim but if you wiggle the wheel you'd probably feel it loose.

Is the car lowered? You might have lost a bump stop..

Dont think the car has been lowered, asked the guy at garage when i had new tyres on it and he said it looked standard.

Might be a dumb question but how do i know if i have lost the bump stop. If i take the wheel off will it be obviouse that tis missing?

I'd reckon it's the bearings in the axle too :( . My wheel had no camber but started to move backwards in the arch until it was rubbing on the bumper and when I took it apart the trailing arm shaft had eaten away about 2mm of beam tube. At least once you get a new beam sorted though it'll be like driving a whole new car :). Think that was the best value upgrade I ever did.

Any how its was allways going to be a project car, so i might aswell take it off the road now ready to get it gutted out.

I spoke to Miles today who is based in Southampton, think the company is called X sport, and he said it can cost from £60 to £300, all depends if the beam is salvageable. Sounds reasonable to me, especially since it is one of the most important parts of the car, second to the engine. When you get another one put in you can also request whatever ride height you want it set at. 3 choices: 1.6/1.9 or 309 GTi rear beam.....choice is yours!

If you can afford to I'd wait till one comes up in the for sale section on here. I've seen rebuilt 205 beams go for around £160 or so. You'll also need new metal brake lines at the back if they haven't been changed recently as they tend to shear off when you take them apart. All this can be had for around £20 or so and is doable in a days work for a first timer.

Basically i have all the time in teh world to do this project as i hope my sister is going to get a Freelander and sell her 306 td sport to me.

£160 aint too bad.

Need to look at the body tho it seriously looks as the bumper is closer judging by how it is to the arch if that makes ant sence, comparing with the other side.

Any how the car cost £625 and ive had a load of fun in it so far, hope there will be more fun in the future.
