Idle Regulator Valve?

Recommended Posts

Guest Pug2112

Hi there

Ive been told I require a new idle regulator valve for my pug 1.6 gti - if so what is the best place to source one. The reason why I require one is to steady my revs on idle.

You should pop over to us at 205parts were only down the road, on the A6. We can verify the problem and have loads of spares :(

What exactly is the car doing, or not doing?

it idles a little rough on starting - the revs drop to about 500 then raise up to 1500. After a while it steadies down but its not 100% perfect. It still raises to around 1200 and drops to 800 continuously on idle

Before you start spending, have you checked for air leaks?

Even a dodgy dipstick seal will mess up the idle.

I can't believe that no-one has mentioned this yet;

The 8v 205 GTi doesn't have an idle regulator valve!!

Nick has made a good point though, check for any air leaks.

Take all the inlet hoses off & give the whole of the intake system a through clean including the AFM & throttle body with carb cleaner & a toothbrush.

Remove the idle ajustment screw on the TB, clean that until it shines & using a cotton bud clean the bypass on the TB for this. Refit everything & get the car properly warmed up (oil temp & cooling fans cutting in) & set your idle speed to about 1000rpm once the fan is off again.

Graham.

Then what actually does regulate idle on a 1.6?

Nothing strictly except for the Supplementary Air Device which acts a choke to increase the revs when the engine is cold & the ecu is putting slightly more fuel in.

This only works for the first five minutes of the car running (if that or at all).

My white GTi used to do the same as yours is now but after doing what I suggested above I've never had the problem again.

Idle constantly rising and falling (hunting) is caused by too rich an idle mixture in my experience. Look for a recessed hex head screw at the corner of the AFM, and turn it anticlockwise with an allen key to lean out the mixture (takes several turns to make any noticeable difference). If you run out of adjustment and it's still hunting, try removing the AFM and cleaning out the air tract with carb cleaner then readjusting the mixture screw again.

I'll be going on a long run - (100 miles) - i'll check to see how the car will idle after a motorway stretch. I think it may only be the first 5 minutes, but will double check. As the Pug isn't my daily drive it doesn't get the motorway treatment - still will keep all informed on how it idled.

Drove from Leicester to Birmingham and back - all in all about 90miles. As the traffic wasn't so bad I wasn't stuck in any major traffic. The only slightly major traffic was in Leicester on the way back. The car idled at 1100 and went up and down by a mm on the dial. Overall it idled well. I'm thinking the long run might have cleared some 'gunk' out - as I dont normally take the Pug on long runs (unless i go via A and B roads). Tomorrow I'll drive into some traffic straight after starting her - that's if it doesn't snow (was snowing in Brum).

Is 1100 ok for an idle point?

Its a bit high imo but if you're happy & it isn't stalling the choice is yours.

I'd still suggest cleaning the AFM & TB internals out & setting everything aftewards though.
