Running And Idle Problems

Recommended Posts

Longun

I'm getting 3 half related problems I think. I'm getting high idle. Low down missfires but only in first when pulling off. Kanagroo'ing when cruising (holding speed with slight throttle) its happening in any gear but worst when low down the rev range below say 4000rpm.

First off I'm running a 285 cam with standard injection so I know I've never going to get this perfect I'm more after trying to make it a bit better until the carbs are on (a month away) I've retarded the ignition quite a bit and I'm not getting pinking or anything and with the ignition where it is it seems to pull clean through the revs any more either way and it seems to hold back or pink.

I've checked the sad via methods on here and closing the pipe to the sad makes no difference cold or warm which is strange.

I get a nice steady 1500rpm idle when its cold and it then rises up to 2000 and sits there when warm. A blip of the throttle and it drops down then straight back up.

I've played around with the idle screw and turning it right in lowers it to 1500rpm but the car then kangaroo's even more when cruising (just sitting on the throttle holding speed) so I turned it back out.

I've checked the throttle position switch and can hear it clicking and the throttle cable is not to tight either.

I've been searching for a possible air leak but can't find anything.

Should I try adjusting the mixture at the same time as the ignition to get a better balance? If so I know its on the air flow meter but which way is richer/leaner?

I might just be trying to ask to much from the standard injection but any help to make it better when cruising I'm not too worried about high idle for the time being as if low would be even worse.

Thanks

Hello, check out my previous posts on kangarooring problems, briefly I solved mine by having no freeplay on the throttle cable & adjusted TPS to operate as soon as throttle was opened, worked for me,MIKE.

Mine is a bit kangarooy, standard engine but i think that's always gona be in it. The guys in at me dads garage said they always had that problem with them back in the day. The curs were

Shim with body washers the top engine mount and smear rubber grease where it contacts the metal mount

Set up the throttle sensor with multimeter with genuine pug settings [won't count if your on carbs.

Just check all your engine mounts are tight and in good condition is the only other bit of adviced I could offer you. Hope that helps.

With a lumpy cam you'll probably need the idle set high for it to sit nicely.

It'll kangaroo like a bastard at low rev cruising too.

Have you tried retracking the AFM? Replacing the ignition components. Plugs, leads cap and rotor arm?

You would need to make sure the car is setup properly regarding the big cam and ignition retard/advance firstly.
