Moys1.9 0 Posted February 24, 2006 My car is idleing at 4500rpm which it steadily reaches on its own. Its also misfiring all over the place. Its just had the head gasket done so could this just mean the car needs the timing doing?
C_W 3 1 Cars Posted February 24, 2006 It idles at 4500rpm!? Was a new cambelt fitted (should have been unless the belt was known to be pretty much brand new anyway. I've known the inlet manifold gaskets to be fitted incorrectly (or the wrong one is used) and this makes it misfire as the injectors get blocked
Anthony 1,003 Posted February 24, 2006 I assume you've checked that the throttle cable isn't fouling on something and holding the throttle open, haven't you? Assuming that the garage/person that did the headgasket didn't change the idle speed or throttle stop, then I'd check the bolt that holds the oil filler to the inlet manifold is screwed in - last car I fixed that was idling at 3000rpm was because that was missing and causing a huge airleak. If the ignition timing is too far advanced then it will idle higher than normal, but I'd be very suprised if it could idle anywhere near that fast on ignition advance alone... Moys1.9 0 Posted February 24, 2006 The cam belt wasn't replaced because it was done on its last service which was about 2000 miles ago. Do you think that sounds too long or should it be ok? I checked the throttle cable and we even tried adjusting it but it had no effect. I'll ask the guy who did the work about the inlet manifold gasket. cheers
jim205GTI 3 Posted February 24, 2006 Check the actual butterfly is not stuck slightly..........mine was like this when i fired it up over the weekend...shot up to between 4500 and 5000 rpm!!! took of the afm and pipework and seen the butterfly was stuck a bit open
Moys1.9 0 Posted February 24, 2006 The bolt Anthony mentioned is missing. Also we just noticed there's a braket that holds the end of the throttle cable thats on the wrong way round. Gonna wait till tomoz and sort it all that out and adjust the timing. cheers for the help.

Moys1.9 0 Posted February 25, 2006 Thanks for the tip Simon. I found that the car was misfiring cause the end of one of the HT leads is corroded. The leads where in my boot for about a month which had a slight leak so I've ordered some more for Tuesday. Then finally I can have a look at the timing. Is it correct that the car will sound a little tappety when its working becaused the tappets are new? This is jus something someone told me. Michael
Anthony 1,003 Posted February 25, 2006 If it sounds tappety then it's more likely that the valve clearances are out - the 8v engine uses solid tappets, so they don't have the same problem with clattering from new unlike hydraulic tappets (as used on the 16v engines)
