Real Bad Fuel Consumption

Recommended Posts

I seem to get very bad fuel consumption, by my reckoning it costs me £5 for a return trip to uni which is 8 miles either way on mostly 50mph dual carriageway. There are a lot of gearchanges due to roundabouts etc but surely getting around 16mpg is bad. I currently pay in region of 88p per litre. However I have noticed from empty to full only takes a little over £30, is this right? I'm starting to doubt the gauges accuracy and wondering if in actual fact the difference between empty and the first quarter on the gauge is really only like £2 of fuel and when its empty there is still like quarter of a tank. This would explain why it loks like Ive used a fiver and why the gauge drop so damn quick. Ive actually driven it when the gauges where pointing to less than minimum and it didnt give any empty tank symptons.

Just wondered, whats the capacity of the tank and what sort of mpg should I expect?

Guages are inaccruate or rather the markings are on earlier cars. 1/4 to empty is only a gallon or so.

Only way to measue mpg is after filling up tank, note mileage, next time fill to tank again, note mileage/fuel, calculate

28mpg is norm for 1.6/1.9

see thats what concerns me, it uses quarter to empty in 16 miles. Its why I wondered if its reading wrongly, IE showing empty when theres actually a lot more left. Whats the capacity of these tanks?

The fuel gauge is nothing short of hopeless below ¼ tank so I'd pay little attention to it until the fuel light starts flickering on (about 8 litres remaining) and comes on solid (about 5-6 litres remaining).

haha, I wondered if they had a fuel light since Ive not seen mine come on even when it read less than empty!! Just hope it works and doesnt leave me stranded. Think I'll have to run it down to empty then drive it up and down the local 2 mile straight and test see if it comes on and if it does when it comes on.

Dont suppose you know the actual capacity do you? I could brim it from when its on the empty line, see ho many litres it takes then I know how many litres are in at the empty mark.

I put 48 litres in mine this morning. That was the first click on the petrol filler. I could have squeezed some more in, but generally don't because it spits it out.

All 3 205s I've had, and my last Civic, had dubious readings below half way. I usually get really excited cos I've got 'apparently' really good mpg for the first half a tank. Then once below the half way mark it just suddenly tumbles :( As I have done a few trips up and down from Exeter to Edinburgh, and London to Edinburgh, I have seen this happen time and time again during constant cruising.

The only way to establish roughly what you are getting is to run it till the fuel light comes on solidly. Then fill up with a decent amount of fuel - £20 to £30 - and note the mileage that the fuel light comes on solidly again. Do this a few times. This isn't perfect but the best you will get.

I've been doing this since I got my 1.6 last month and I'm getting 28-30 mpg with a variety of driving, but the same route every day. If I only fill up with a fiver it appears to be consumed within a few miles, so small fill ups will not give you an accurate answer.

well if someone got 48 litres in and mine is taking £30ish from empty then Im out by a good 13 litres with fuel at 88.1p , looks like I found the problem.

also depending if ur traveling up or down a slope can affect ur dial :(

ive crapped my self b4 when i parked at my girlfriends, leaving the car facing up a large hill. got in the morn and it appeared like all my fuel had gone! soon realised it was jus the engle of the hill.

also, have u ever noticed, when u fill ur car up to the top, the dial stays full for around 50 miles, before it moves again. im guessing that it would probably work the same way with the empty side, and peugeot covered their backs by saying your empty, when in reality uve got another 30 miles in the tank.
