Engine Trouble...again

Recommended Posts

pugpete1108

i have been having alot of trouble with my gti stalling after it is warmed up, like about ten mins or so have tried changing everything fuel rail injectors filter throttle body cleaning out pipes, etc.

but still doing it hmm until when i came to change the tps and left it unplugged and it ran ok ,is this right , i though it should stall if the tps is not plugged in, can any of you guys clear this up for me , i would have thought it would be electrical on the tps wiring??? the car seems to rev correctly and all that but i am a little puzzled just need to make it last another month till i gat a new one and put this one in the garage to fit an mi on tbs wooo hooo

The TPS on the jetronic system is a simple closed-open-closed switch with no specific intermediate position readings except for open to the ecu.

I know when my ex's GTi had a dead throttle switch it wouldn't idle once warm & ran fine otherwise but that was with it plugged in, never tried it on one without.

Did you actually drive it with the TPS disconnected or just fired it up and let it idle?

Sounds feasable to me, but it's unlikely IMO that it's the TPS itself that is at fault.

When the TPS is connected, it cuts fuel on overrun and switches the injectors back on around 1100rpm or so. Problem with this is that if your engine is out of tune, it doesn't have enough time to stabilse the freefalling revs again when the injectors come back on and the engine cuts out.

Easiest way to verify this is to slow down for the traffic lights with the car still in gear, and when you're doing about 1000-1100rpm then dip the clutch. Chances are it won't cut out.

Whenever I've had this problem, it's either been the idle mixture is miles out, or the throttle stop is too far in and you're too reliant on the idle bypass (speed) screw.

no i dont drive it like it , i just left it unplugged by accident and it kept running , could it be a problem in the wiring loom? when i come up to lights i slow down in gear and it kangaroos slightly (usual traite so i've heard) but when i dip the clutch it doesnt stall.

the fault occours when it is still on idle , it splutters and then dies and then won't start witout backfiring alot

just can't wait the get another motor and rip this one apart cos there is far too much wrong with it, but i wouldn't swap it for 40 million stolen pounds :(

Was it the same throttle switch or a different one to usual?

Have you tested the switch using the method from Haynes manual? If not its an easy test & I've posted it before fairly recently so a search should find it.

When I had my 8v I always had the throttle switch positioned so that it never "clicked" on the idle setting when the throttle closed which seemed to prevent it stalling but still kept the WOT setting for full throttle enrichment. Also seemed to make slightly smoother to drive in traffic.

i havent actually tested the switch cos me multimeter broke a while ago and havent been arsed to get a new one , i just replaced it with one i had in the garage with no change at all, i have heard about running with the switch not clicking but surely if disconnecting it made no difference then......?
