Seat Trim

Recommended Posts

alexi

Can someone tell me what seat trim did the 1.9 205 GTI have when released in the UK and what were the changes to the trim through the production life of the 1.9 GTI.

Has the 1.9 GTI always had half leather side bolsters? or did they have the black velour side bolsters in the early years? Did the 1.9 ever have those tweed (slightly furry look) seats?

I just read what I rote and trim sound a bit unclear, by trim I mean the cloth/ fabric that covers the seats.

As fas as I know there has only been two types of seats for the 1.9 GTI both half leathers, the earlier type were grey with a light and dark grey cloth insert, and the later type in either red and black check, or green and black check cloth inserts. However some limited editions came with full leather iirc.

Hmm, interesting.

Because in Australia our 1.9 GTI's initially had velour trim, then this was changed to tweed and finall we recieved half leather and red or green chack pattern.

I presume then the Australian 1.9 GTI's initially had seats from the European 1.6 GTI.

In europe the 1.6 GTI's did initially have velour trim didn't they? And this was then changed to tweed? and finaly to half leather?

Almost correct. The 1.6 had the trim you mention but was never fitted with the half leather, that was reserved for the 1.9. I know you Guys refer to the various phases as 1, 2 and 3, which phase had which trim?. How do your cars compare to the Japanese spec. ones? Because these seem to have cloth seats on the 1.9 and are also fitted with the 1.6 alloys, i believe. The also had alot of Auto's and AC, so similar to the Aussie ones. did you Guys have any auto GTi's?

There were no official auto 1.9 GTI's brought to Australia and all Asutralain 205 GTI's had air-con as standard, we get a bit of sunshine in this country.

We refer to the cars as Series 1,1.5, 2 and 3. As far as I know, officially the factory never released the car in series but refering to the cars by series is common place here.

Series 1 had Barritz velour trim with black velour bolsters, series 1.5 had the Barritz OR light grey and red tweed with grey tweed bolsters. Series 2 and 3 had half leather with the check pattern cloth. The series 2 and 3 also got the bigger 15 inch alloys that you guys in Europe had from the start of production of the 1.9.

AFAIK the aussies call the later motronic cars "phase 3". Something which makes sense - unlike us, who still call them phase 2, despite them having some major differences to normal jetronic phase 2s.

Josh, I know we had cat's fitted as standard from the start of production but I thought we had engines with the same compression as in europe, did we actually get lower compression motors here in Oz??

Alexi, i'm not sure TBH. So you guys must of had Jetronic with a CAT on your early cars? And Motronic on the later models. The only CAT equipped ones that we had were the later Motronic ones and they had a low compression engine, to enable tham to run on 95 RON fuel.

thats not quite right, there were some UK cars with an optional cat that still ran jetronic iirc.

im sure that the GTi's were available in the UK with CATS as an option from circa 1990. would suggest to me that jackherer is right and they ran jetronic with the cat.

I was under the impression that the later Motronic cars were more powerfull than the early Jetronic cars, is this so? And if so was the higher power produced from these low compression motors??

As far as i know there are only three phases.

The series 1 was a 1.6 gti with a detuned 1.9 engine, 14'' pepperpot wheels and the early dash.

The series 2 was also based on the 1.6 gti, but it has a grey later style dash. (They also had the 14'' wheels and 74kw engine)

Then the series 3 had the 90kw engine, 1.9 gti suspention/brakes etc, black interior and half leather seats. (this spec should be the same for the limited release "classic") I believe that the half leathers in aus were different to the 1.9 ones available in england though, as all the english cars i have seen have had a different pattern between the leather bits.
