Recommended Posts

Gavtrials

Hello,

Hoping someone will be able to point me in the right direction,

Just sorting out a friends 205 mi16 for him and one job on the list is to sort out a water leak inside the car!

When its been raining the passanger foot well is soaking wet!

I cant see any visable signs to where this is cuming from but either have i had a good look,

Any ideas for the next time i look?

Dude check under the front quarters, just at the point where they meet the bottom of the front doors, this is where the drain holes are, chances are the drain's are blocked and the water is being forced though into the cabin.

Get a small thin tool and clear all the leaves and s*it that are built up at the base of the front quarters, there is likely to be a lot of debris. After you have cleared leaves and stuff pour water into the the plastic grille at the base of the windscreen, it should flow straight through to the bottom of the front quarter.

You may have to take the grille at the base of the windscreen of, to clear crap from in there, but its a bitch getting it back on because its held inplace by the widscreen rubber seal. Try first to clear drain from bottom of front quarters.

is the heater working properly? If not then its likely to be a split heater matrix!

lol,Well i just drouped a freshly rebuilt mi lump in there for him, But theres no water pipes conected up yet so no water in the heater matrix.

Ive dryed it out a few times and its cum back when its been rainning.

D'oh didn't notice the age of this thread.

As for the leak mine has leaked in through the windscreen (no trim so can see it tracking down the bulkhead) and through the door aperture behind the door card.

I sorted the door out by silicone sealing some polythene over the holes under the door card.

Footwell keeps filling up in my track car too.

With no interior it's easy to see where it comes in tho! in the windscreen, down the bulkhead to the footwell.

Need to wang some sealant on it when it eventually drys out.

Sometimes when the sunroof handle bolt seals go it can come in from there, and sometimes arial can be loose and let in water.

I know my sunroof bolt seals went and i had a lot of water coming in and sitting on the sunroof locking mechanism. To be honest though the car has sat in a garage for a long time so i don't know 100% if that was the cause.

The leak on my car is from below the window. I took the scuttle panel out and sprayed water into there by the blower air inlet. Then the foot well got water in it. I cleared all the channels through and pulled up the carpet but the water looks to be coming down from behind the glove box/dash area and running down. Looks like the leak is between the wing and the footwell, any thoughts?

Anyone, wanna have a got at this on Saturday. Is there an easy way to get the glovebox out to see behind it?

I bet it is the windscreen seal. Have a windscreen specialist reseal it for you.

To take the glovebox out, remove the two bolts holding the bonnet release lever and pull it out of the way.

Then remove the 10? screws below the glovebox holding the panel on and then remove the 10mm nut. There are two more screws just under the lower edge of the glovebox lid.

The glovebox will now slip out. Disconnect the glovebox light wiring to free it completely.

You'll find the bulkhead sound insulation is sopping wet. Hold it off the metal to allow it to dry out with some bits of wood.

If your carpet is wet, the water will have crept all over the interior of the car. I recommend you remove the carpet and sound deadening underneath fully and allow to dry fully before repacing. I suggest you run around with no carpet or sound deadening in for a few weeks to be sure the leak has gone.

Did you test for leaks after?

It's still curing so didn't want to disturb it.

Almost certain it won't leak as it's sealed good and proper! :P

Will let you know once tested.

The tube was only £3 in B&Q too

What sort of stuff is this? Your statement that it's still curing worries me. If it is silicone based it will not stand the test of time because there is enough flexing around the screen and rubber to upset the seal given by anything that cures such as silicone.

My windscreen man recommends that only a butyl-rubber type mastic should be used. This is that horrible black stuff that never goes completely hard (just skins a little) and thus allows a good degree of flexing to take place without disturbing the seal it gives. In fact it just goes on getting better as it seeps into all the little cracks and voids over time.

Similar stuff is used to seal touring caravan panels for the very same reason.

Yep it's similar or the same as that stuff (but cheaper and easier to get hold of). Stays like a sticky black putty when it's gone off.

It still does go off to a degree as it's quite fluid in the tube. I thought I'd give it a chance before lobbing buckets at it

If you do use this have some barbecue lighter fuel handy as it wipes off the excess with ease.

Well the screen seems to be sealed now. However I still have a leak!

It seems to be coming in through the scuttle under the wipers? there is a fair bit of water hanging around up there which doesn't seem to drain off effectively.

Is there a common place under there which causes leaks into the cabin?

Is this the passengers side? as this is where mine is leaking ;)

No drivers

But same applies I'm sure

Can see it trickle down right in the corner but there is a brace in the way so I can't see where it comes from.

Just had the scuttle panel off and blasted it with a hose. Right enough a small trickle started down the corner again ;)

Going to go stand on my head now and see if I can find where it's coming in with a mirror
