Wicker man 2 Posted February 20, 2006 (edited) got a 1.9 gti & over the last month its started playing up drive it on a smooth road & from about 30mph + the steering wheel trembles/vibrates ever so slightly & stays the same up to about 60-70mph but above that its gets abit worse now ive had it round to a 110 quicky & its just the same as what it is at 70mph ish ive been over all the suspension twice & so has my garage & both of us cant find anything wrong in the suspension or the steering rack area etc 6months ago it had new top mounts springs shocks bottem arms i evon put 4 new tyres on 600 miles ago goodyear egale f1's ive swooped wheels around made no differance trackings spot on ive re balanced all the wheels at my local tyre monkey place but i dont really think i get a good job there i get it on the cheap for a few bucks a wheel thinking of taking it to sca rally in norwich & handing over £40 to have them done proper been looking at it again today before i part with £40 at sca rally & i found that if you hold the steering wheel at 10 & 2 there seems to be bit of play in the steering colem (cant spell that) i can wiggle the steering wheel abit left to right & up & down a tiny bit i cant tell to well if its just the steering wheel moving or the hole thing Edited February 20, 2006 by Wicker man
Simes 248 2 Cars Posted February 20, 2006 Upper steering column bearing wear. Loosen were the column joins the lower column and move the upper column towards you a little. Tighten up and see if it's gone. I sorted mine with another old column. There was a thread on this about 6 months ago
hengti 2 Posted February 20, 2006 (edited) If that's not it, it's also worth trying to balance the wheels 'yourself' by experimenting with different wheel mounting locations/stud locations Never had to do this on the 205, but always used to work on the mini When you get wheels balanced, all that's balanced is the wheel (...) - but if there are any imbalances in the hub assembly, the problem will still be there - and might even be exagerated by adding balance weights to the wheel Best way to balance your wheels is by having them done on a dynamic balancing machine which balances the wheel whilst it's still on the car You can get achieve pretty much the same thing just by experimenting as above. I never bother paying to get wheels balanced - waste of money just a suggestion anyway Edited February 20, 2006 by hengti

Adam B 0 Posted February 22, 2006 (edited) I got really bad vibrations when I lost all the oil out of a knackared front koni shock... (thanks halfords) Not rev dependent is it? Hows the driveshafts and rear engine mount? Edited February 22, 2006 by Adam B

Simes 248 2 Cars Posted February 23, 2006 If you say you have some play when you wobble the steering wheel then it will be this, that is the upper column bearings that have worn causing the vibration. If it is at speed then it can be the driveshafts, do a search on this as I had a this happen last year with a reasonably new shaft. There was a lot of discussion on this. Wicker man 2 Posted February 23, 2006 (edited) the upper bearing in the column is now knocking at slow speed when i go up my dirt track of a drive, so im going to order the bits next weeks plus its booked into my local pug dealer for next thursday for a full going over Edited February 23, 2006 by Wicker man
Simes 248 2 Cars Posted February 23, 2006 You'll need the complete upper column, there are no spares, it's around £100 and shouldn't take too long to replace. If you read what I originally wrote, try that out first before shellig out.
maturin23 10 Posted February 23, 2006 You're taking a 15+ year old car to a main dealer? I have to say in my opinion you're wasting your money. You'll pay more and probably get lower quality work done than if you find a good independent garage. I called a few round here, chatted about 205's., chose the guy who was obviously an enthusiast (owned one in the old days etc) and they did a great job at a reasonable price. Just a thought...
