Differences Between Early & Late Cars

Recommended Posts

Having blown my 1.6 gti up at the weekend i've been looking for a new engine. I curerently have a 1991 J reg car. I've just been offered a 1985 car with reasonable millage. I know the gear boxes are different but can i use my late gearbox on an early engine engine? and what year did the engine power change from 105 - 115 bhp?

Is there anything else i'll have to change to put the early engine in my car?

BE3 gearbox will go on a BE1 car. I think the power changed on the 1.6 to 115bhp when the 1.9 came out, 1986. There are quite a lot of differences between an early car and an 1991 car. I think the wiring loom is different, it dosen't have a multiway plug on the gerabox. There are quite a lot of other small differences as well. I would keep looking for a later engine that will go in easily. 1985 205 GTIs are rare now it would be a shame to break a nice car just for the engine.

1985 car should be 105 hp

mechanically there are a few differences and obviously a lot of styling tweaks

off the top of my head i think the shockers are a lot harder (providing they are original)

the downpipe is different

engine power as mentioned

as rich mentioned the harness differs as does the engine bay coil setup

the rest is cosmetic

have you got any more info on it?

id really like a 1985 car if you dont end up having it?

Thanks for the replies. Think theres a couple of later cars i may have a look at.

The car i was offered turned out to be 1986 but the other cars are the right colour so i can rob a few pannels as well.
