Drum Brakes Grinding Badly When Cold

Recommended Posts

Dave

on the 406 estate, the rear passenger side drum has started making a bad grinding noise when braking for the first few pushes when cold.

Its definately the rear brakes as it makes the same noise if i pull the handbrake. The grinding fades away as the brakes warm up with use.

I assumed the shoes would be worn or unseated, so got a new set and had the drum off today. The old shoes still have plenty of life in them, are worn evenly and all seems well. They are seated properly and free to move as required. There is no sign of metal-metal rubbing anywhere

Anyone got any suggestions for a cure? Its a really bad noise, and has only started doing this recently. Its got me a bit worried as "something" is definately amiss, but I just cant see what.

None of the edges of the friction materials have started to come away from the backing pad have they? Used to get this on mini's, 80% of the time that was it.

I'm having the same problem with the girlfriends VW Lupo, nasty grinding noise when cold or wet (to imbarrising stage at times!). But the brakes perform perfectly well, have loads of pad left and were new less than a year ago!

Interested in a solution too as i've ran out of ideas.

Sticking handbrake mechanism? Once driven & the brakes are used, heat gets into it after driving for a while it free's off?

I've had this on every drum braked car I've had. My current 1.6 is not too bad actually, mainly only does it if it has been left for a few days. My Mk2 Astra was terrible though. It was first car and my dad said that the drums were just getting full of crap all the time.

My 405 does this and its worse after driving in heavy rain,if you leave it over night the following morning you can hear them grinding for a while,i have checked the drums and shoes and all is ok.

Only thing i can imagine it is,is light corrosion overnight on the shiny face of the drum?

Not too bothered though but thought this may help :)

Aye, I have heard from a few other people now and it seems to be a pretty common occurance and has no obvious cause.

Looks like I will just have to live with it.
