jshep205gti 3 Posted February 18, 2006 I'm so pissed off! There must be something I am doing wrong... my rocker gasket just won't seal. This is the 3rd one I've put on my engine and it makes such a mess of the engine bay. Does anyone else find sealing the rocker cover a problem? I've read that it doesn't need to be to tight as this will distort the shape and therefore leak. 11Nm sound right? That's like bearly tight. Should I be using some sealer aswell? I fail to believe that this should be nesessary. Please suggest.... I'm about to go mental. Thanks! Shep
ashlee205gti 1 Posted February 20, 2006 The breather pipe on the rocker cover, check its not blocked or kinked. Is the rocker cover itself bent or out af shape at all. It shouldn't be leaking everywhere.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted February 20, 2006 I always put a thin smear of liquid gasket between them, seems to work wonders.
jshep205gti 3 Posted February 20, 2006 Right, bit of an update. A friend had a look and basically decided there was too much oil around for it to be the rocker gasket. He could tell as soon as he opened the bonnet. So where is the oil thats on the dizzy cap and side of battery etc coming from? He started the engine and was keeping a close eye on it. No oil weeping from the rocker gasket. So this means its being spat from somewhere. I immediately thought driveshafts... but I wouldn't be losing engine oil if it was would I? So what's he told me to do is get under the car and clean up as much oil mess as possible. Then I can run it about abit and it should be obvious where the leak is coming from. Surely, there can't be THAT many places oil can leak from?!?!
dee205 3 Posted February 20, 2006 Camshaft oil seal maybe? Engine oil won't come out your drive shafts. Gear oil will but you wouldn't be driving it too long if it was! Blocked breather pipes would cause it to piss out the dipstick. Lift the bonnet and give the car a good rev. You should se if it comes out the dipstick then.
