Starter Motor Interchangability

Recommended Posts

Frequentflyer

Hallo forum members,

I am still having starter problems with the CTi. As it is an automatic I cannot roll start it.

Looking under the bonnet it is almost impossible to see the starter motor/solenoid, or get a hand to it, as it is "buried" under a mass of other "bits". Yes, as you will probably have gathered, I am almost totally non-technical!

I have three questions:-

1. To get at/take-off the starter motor on the CTi, should I be trying to get at it from underneath the car?

2. As I have a 1.6 Junior auto - with a big-end gone - I have a source of parts. But would the starter motor on it be useable on the CTi?

3. Are there any technically competent members living near me who might be able to help me? I am based between Oxford & Reading.

Any help will be most gratefull received.

Thanks

Roy

Access isn't easy on any XU engined 205 (which both of your cars are).

How you go about it depends on how good you are with spanners or how much you want to strip down to make it easier for yourself. I've done three with everything fitted & only minor items removed to make access easier but some people prefer to remove the radiator & / or inlet manifold to get access to the starter.

The starter bolts through the gearbox flange & is held on by three 8mm allen bolts, you should be able to get to these fairly easily but they are very tight.

There are a few members around you that might be willing to help out but I'm not going to volunteer them.

Graham.

the easiest way is to remove the inlet manifod saves a lot of knuckle scraping

many people wil say they can do it in 10 mins without removing the inlet but ive found that for the sake of a gasket its the least painful!

most xu starters are interchangable, only the diesel one is significantly more powerful for cranking

But they still fit straight on.

All petrol XU's have the same part number showing on the parts Cd.

Thanks for that Graham,

I have a young friend, whose passion - unfortunately for me - is Supra's and not Pugs. However he has volunteered to help, and he had a look yesterday. He asked some questions, which I was not able to answer. If you could PM me with your email address, I could send you some photos, and explain what it is that we are trying to establish.

I would be most grateful.

I would also be most grateful if there are any forum members reading this, who live near the Oxford/Reading area, and would be prepared to give this old guy the benefit of their wisdom - onsite so to speak!

Thanks Roy
