Poor Mpg On An Xud

A while back I got my girlfriend a non-turbo 1.8 diesel.

 

It seems to be doing pretty crappy MPG for what it is though, about 40 something MPG and almost 50mpg if drive horrendously slowly! I've tried putting Millers fuel system cleaner stuff in it, but its made no differnce (as I expected really).

 

From what I've read before and if the official figures are to be believed, the thing should be doing 50mpg+ all day long, no matter how I drive it.

 

Just wondering if anyone could point out what to check on these? It smells like its running slightly rich (but then it is a stinking derv anyway :ph34r:).

 

Its done 106k miles.

its old and getting 40+mpg is decent TBH, you could turn down the fuel if you think its over fueling, beyond that its probably going to cost more than the cars worth as it could be low compression from worn cyclinder bores and worn shims and valves in the head. Reshimming is pretty simple and inexpensive but not worth it if the valve seats are goosed.

Dirty injectors, air filter all the usual stuff.

 

Although that does sound poor as I get a similar (maybe higher) mpg from my STDT which drinks quicker when its spinning in the turbo zone.

Sounds like somethings wrong to me, my TD does 45+mpg regardless how i drive it and i'm running 1.3 bar boost and fuel is turned up to the max ( smokes a lot!) A friend of mine commutes in a non-turbo 205 diesel and he says he gets 60mpg most of the time and thats done 180,000 miles!

Yeah, those were the kind of figures I was expecting.

 

Assuming I have no fuel leaks, should I try to get a good set of injectors?

Maybe the fuel pump timing could be out?

With only 106k, i wouldn't say the injectors were dodgy, however depends if someone has been playing with it! Do you get lots of black smoke? or any blue smoke? if black then it's overfuelling, blue then rings ar knackered. if neither, i'd say youve got a leak, shouldn't be too hard to find, just smell for stinky diesel!

I ran one past 180k miles and it still did over 55mpg on a run and 50-55 locally. The one I'm running now I drive like its stolen and it still returns ~50mpg and it has done over 140k miles. Therefore 40mpg is certainly not decent for a non-Turbo diesel 205...

I've been told of injectors with less than 50k on them suffering if poor (cheap) diesel is used & it just does lots of short journeys with them getting waxed up from the lack of additives in the fuel to prevent this.

 

Even a diesel that has a good working life should have injectors replaced around 100k, I'm intending to do mine sometime soon now they've done near 150k & I don't have any starting problems or clouds of black smoke out of the back.

 

Pump timing is hard to get wrong unless someone has taken the top off the pump & had a mess around inside it, you lock it with two M8 bolts when changing the cambelt so it shouldn't move. If it was wrong I thinkit would show signs of this more when starting anyway.
