kate205gti 4 Posted February 16, 2006 Im about to swap my quaife lsd from my old 1.9 box into my new mi16 box - am i ok to use general purpose (outdoor) silicone sealant to seal the diff casing? cheers
Guest smokinslim Posted February 16, 2006 Probably, although instant gasket would be better. Doubt it would cost anymore than silicone either
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted February 16, 2006 Never use general purpose sealant as it lacks the additives to withstand oil and heat. Go to Halfords or any good motorfactors and buy instant gasket.
Sam 4 Posted February 16, 2006 RTV sealant is the best I've heard, you can get it from a motor factors. Halfords don't sell RTV.
kate205gti 4 Posted February 16, 2006 right ive got hermatite red instant gasket, universal blue allround gasket and all purpose silicon sealant - which one should i use on my diff casing? or should i find some rtv? and from where? i thought RTV was trade only? thanku
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted February 16, 2006 None of those, They will all leak. The only stuff to use is Wurth RTV (Trade only) or similiar, SO it might be worth poping into a local garage and asking them for a blob
Sam 4 Posted February 16, 2006 It is thats why you should go into a part factor to get it. Its the best stuff for it, or so I was advised by a few people.
ashley peddle 3 Posted February 16, 2006 couldnt get any so we used a pritt-stick instead... hopes it holds
Anthony 1,003 Posted February 17, 2006 Dave Baker's (Pumaracing) recommendation of using silicon sealant seems to have worked wonders on my sump - if it works on a sump, then I see no reason it won't work on a gearbox casing just fine....

GSF and bennetts didnt have any (GSF recommended the blue stuff and bennetts didnt have a clue) will use rtv AND silicone sealant just to be on the safe side cheers
ashley peddle 3 Posted February 17, 2006 i have a decent place near my work called brown brothers kate - want me to go lookie for some RTV tomorrow?
Anthony 1,003 Posted February 17, 2006 okies will go find a garage who actually puts gearboxes together It's not a gearbox specific sealant so it doesn't have to be a gearbox specialist.
petert 588 Posted February 17, 2006 (edited) I use ThreeBond 1211. It's made especially for high viabration metal-metal seals eg motorcycle gearboxes. It's the best! Edited February 17, 2006 by petert

Miles 331 1 Cars Posted February 17, 2006 No will stock the Wurth RTV to sell bar Wurth UK and that you need a trade account to buy some, A local garage should keep something or something similar

James_R 3 Posted February 18, 2006 I use marine grade RTV, has a wide enough temp range and is meant ot survide salt water and diesel. Been using it for ages now and seems to work a treat on everything I've tried, inlet manifold to heads, gearbox casings, etc... http://www.decoratingdirect.co.uk/viewprod/b/BITHA6/ opps forgot to add here's the link to it, I use black, but guess you could use white or clear if you wanted ot be a wierdo.
