JamieTonks 1 Posted February 16, 2006 If the head gasket has gone on a car and it needs a re skim. Do you have to strip the head ? ie so its a bare head jamie
ashlee205gti 1 Posted February 16, 2006 (edited) I didnt, i removed the camshaft so the valves were all shut and were not protruding over the gasket 'face' i also removed all the inlet/exhaust manifold studs so that it would be easier to line up on the machine. Remember to clean any oil/waterways to make sure theres no swarf left in there. Edited February 16, 2006 by ashlee205gti
phatgti 0 Posted February 16, 2006 they are a pig to set up due to the angle but like ashley says it's perfectly possible to do. You only want to take enough off to clean the face up, usually 10 thou. Give it a damn good washout and used compressed air (if possible) to blast the crap out. M3Evo 0 Posted February 16, 2006 Crumbs, is it an Mi16 head you're getting skimmed? Definately worth checking that the valves don't stand proud of the head's surface. Seem to recall that the inserts aren't far from the surface and as the valves sit on them.......

jeremy 71 Posted February 16, 2006 I took the whole head in and they did the complete job for £55 if that helps, I guess it all depends on the engineering company, although they did say that if I took the cam out etc they would do it for £35. All prices include VAT and was done about 18 months ago.
