Problems Getting Into Gear

Recommended Posts

EnglishRob

Hi folks,

I'm hoping someone can give me a bit of advice regarding my shed, ahem, 205.

I've been having a problem lately (well over the past couple of weeks) where I've been finding it hard to get the car into gear. It has been crunching slightly when putting the car in 3rd and 4th gears, and really crunching and grinding when trying to put the car in reverse.

Things have got worse to the point where I am finding it very hard to put the car in 1st or 2nd gear, I physically have to push the gear stick hard to get it in gear. Doing this however has caused the linkage to come off the gear selector twice, one of which times left me a bit stranded outside of town with no tools and no idea on how to fix the problem.

I did wonder if it could be related to the clutch cable? When the gearbox was changed the clutch cable was tightened as much as it could be but didn't seem to make a difference.

I managed to get some help fixing the problem earlier, but I'm still finding it hard to get the car into gear. Anyone got any ideas, or does it look like I need a new clutch/gearbox?

If it's any help, I'm running a 1.6 with a 1.6 BE3 gearbox.

You say the gearbox was changed... was it a rebuilt 'box you fitted or not? Just sounds like a knackered 'box to be fair, time for a rebuild or get another known good one ;)

It's not a new/rebuilt one. It was one from my mates 1.6 205GTI. The car it was from had done about 100k miles as far as I know.

I was hoping that it wasn't stuffed, but hey, I guess if it's stuffed, it's stuffed.

Do you have any ideas on how much a replacement would cost me?

I guess since I'm planning on having my Mi16 fitted in the near future (month or so) then I could look for a 1.9 BE3 if they're any cheaper/easier to get hold of?

Could also just be the clutch not clearing but again if you replaced the box wasn't the clutch at least checked for wear? Could also be a stretched clutch cable of course...

As far as I know, the clutch was replaced too. I did wonder about the clutch cable. I didn't do the work myself, but I guess I could try and get hold of a clutch cable anyway since they're so cheap from GSF.

Sounds like the clutch might have just de-adjusted itself - quite possible if the lock nut wasn't done up tightly enough. I've had this happen before and it's exactly those symptoms.

Should only take 5 minutes to tighten it up and see if it's any better so nothing to loose really!

I'll have another look tomorrow. I did try tightening it when the gearbox was changed (had a similar problem, but not as bad) but it seemed to be as tight as it would go.

It's just typical for it to go wrong now though. I have a job interview tomorrow morning, and have to go up to Chesterfield next Friday ;)

Well, looking on the bright side of things, if I get this job, I can hopefully afford to do my Mi16 conversion and insure it.

Had a bit of luck today. I saw a 1.6 BE3 gearbox on ebay last night going for £30. I've won the auction too ;)

Hopefully this should get the car running okay for a few weeks until I can afford a refurbished box. Also managed to convince the girlfriend into buying a 405Mi16 :D

I'll have another look tomorrow. It seems to be better when the engine is cold.

At the moment it seems to be one problem after another. I've also got a problem with the starter not kicking in. Sods law that problem occurred this morning when I parked the car up. To make matters worse I had an interview 30 mins after the problem occurred.

On a happier note, I managed to get to the interview with 5 mins to spare, and I got the job which means I can put a few quid to one side to sort out all these little problems which are starting to mount up.
