Heatshielding My Bulkhead

Recommended Posts

Guest rick03054

I should have the big hole in my bulkhead welded up by the weekend so I'm looking at heatshielding it so it won't get cooked again!

I've seen this mat on rallydesign.com. Anyone used it? will it take a turbo being right next to it? and what would be the best way to attach it? I can't see many adhesives standing that kind of heat.

There's a pic from the inside here incase anyone hasn't seen the hole. I've removed the exhaust now and I got some weld through primer and I'll probably stick some VHT paint on (or maybe just hammerite) once it's done.

it will be ideal mate, we use it at work so if its good enough for an SLR then it will do for a 205 TT  wouldnt bother with the vht paint though. if you can find any get some of the corrogated aluminium sheet and make a heatshield to go around the turbo aswell as sticking the sheet to the bulkhead

How does the mat attach?

I was thinking about some kind of decent shield for the turbo, I'm not keen on alll those pipes and wires being anywhere near it! I know other peoples cars have been fine but sods law dictates mine would go up in smoke!

Completly off topic but have you painted your engine in matt black? It contrasts very well against the blue. Never seen anything like it.

The cabin does get VERY hot if you run it on high revs for a while (think 130mph+ for 10 minitues). Most of this heat is from teh turbo and manifold so a heat shield above these would be good, if for no reason than to protect the M/C, servo, fuel filter etc.

Johnnyp - I've seen a few rebuild pics of you car, VERY nice by the way :) . Hope mine looks half as good one day! Is it the same kind of mat you used? how much did you need?

This may seem like a dumb question but is there any particular contact adhesives I should look for or avoid? Would this kind be ok?

I had thought about just the area around the turbo but it looks far better with the whole lot done.

Grrr... STILL havn't got it welded, been fobbed off with a couple of excuses, some a bit dubious but one apparently true but weird one, every now and again the guys hands go numb for a few days. It's a medical condition or so it seems. :)

Now theres too much damn snow!

I did get a nice package from rally design with a 1mX1m heatshield mat and a length of heatproof tubing for the wires etc.

I even looked into welding classes at the college but they started last month, and it sure as hell better be done by August when the next course starts!! :P
