Frequentflyer 0 Posted February 14, 2006 Hallo all, Need some help please. I have had minor problems with starting for a couple of years. Would always start and fire first time from cold, but when warm - sometimes - had to turn the starter motor for a long time, or in several bursts before it fired. Now starter motor wont turn at all, just clicks when I turn the ignition. Have tried with jump leads/extra battery, but no difference. Any advice would be most welcome. joelpsmith 1 Posted February 14, 2006 (edited) Check the earth which is bolted on to the top of the gearbox, make sure the connection is clean and tight. You could also run wire direct from the battery positive, to starter solanoid to eliminate any other wiring. If the starter is not working, you can get a new one for around £60 and its not to difficult to fit. Edited February 14, 2006 by joelpsmith
Anthony 1,003 Posted February 14, 2006 Check the solenoid wiring as this is the usual culprit for clicking starters, in particular corroded contacts in the brown multiplug above the gearbox. Given it's an auto, it might be worth verifying that the starter inhibitor for the gearbox (stops the starter engaging if it's not in Park) is working correctly. I suspect this isn't the cause though, as the "clicking" suggests that power is getting to the solenoid. If the wiring is all OK and cleaned up connections didn't help, then it might be worth trying another starter as the solenoids can "stick" in them - a short term fix is a belt from a hammer... richard 0 Posted February 15, 2006 Make sure the battery is charged.....this was a issue on mine, turned out to be the battery dumping its voltage when the starter was ....started!
Frequentflyer 0 Posted February 15, 2006 Make sure the battery is charged.....this was a issue on mine, turned out to be the battery dumping its voltage when the starter was ....started! Thanks Richard, I have tried various things, including of course jump leads from another car whose engine is running. On one or two occasions the starter motor has engaged for a few moments, but not long enough for the engine to fire. On most occasions you just hear a low clicking noise. As I am totally non-technical, I will seek some professional advice, but any input from you and other Forum members is most welcome, especially if it is "spelt out". richard 0 Posted February 15, 2006 This could be down to the infamous brown multiplug...sits on top of the gbox. Do a search for that and you'll find a number of topics which have been posted before.
pugrallye 0 Posted February 15, 2006 also check battery clamps, as they tend to lose contactivity after a while, cause of lots of head scratching!
