Recommended Posts

kate205gti

ive got to send my mi16 head off for a skim this week and just after some advice please :)

ive never had a head skimmed before - how much do i need to strip it before sending it off? (is as it came off the car at the mo), also what do i need to strip and how?

are there any head skimming places who would strip it for me? its quite an expensive head so I dont want to feck it up ;)

also any recommended skimers in herts/beds/bucks area please :)

thankyou ;)

How it came off the block should be fine, will save a small amount if you remove the valves yourself.

It might be a bit far but Ivor Searle in Soham are pretty good, I had a 8v head done there with a skim/de-coke and a head set with bolts for £85. They put a sticker on it afterwards so if the head ever over heats you can tell ;)

I took mine in with the valves in place, i removed the camshaft however so all the valves were shut, i also took out the inlet and exhaust manifold studs.

Remember to clear any swarf out of the oil/water ways before refitting.

im sure Dave Baker can skim it for you if hes setup for skimming, which he *usually* is. You will need to strip the head down yourself though. You will need to take any studs out that will stop it from sitting the on the mill table and also any that could foul the cutting tool, so in other words any that are lower or higher (depending on how you look at it) than the gasket face.

EDIT: If you are sending it in the post then for heavens sake wrap it up well, old towels wrapped around it and then in a decent sized box with loads of newspaper. Dont do something daft and use those small foam bow things coz they get in the head. (its been done before)

I'll strip, rebuild and skim it for you if you can't find anywhere closer.

Had mine done last week by a guy my friend knows who builds dragster engines. I just took the camshaft out and left the valves in.

He also pressure tested the head as the first one i gave him to do was F**ked.

Don't know if you still go to Willingham Kate - but Soham's only about 15-20mins further on :D
