Engine Dead Cheapest Options :/

Recommended Posts

Hey was on the motorway yesturday giving it a bit :/ and the car started misfirring at 5000 revs it usually does 1 misfire at 5000 but this felt like hundreds then i lost power and pulled over in the hard shoulder the car stalled out i started it again and its knocking over 1750revs i had to drive it home but could only get about 35mph in 5th at 1600revs theres a few journeys i had to do today so i doubt the engine is going to be recoverable.

the oil was fine and the water was fine any idea what caused it to go it was 5000revs in 5th with a 1.9 engine on a 1.6 box if that helps with what speed i was doing at the time.

anyways. i havent got the money to MI my 205 at the moment nor could i insure it right now so im trying to sum up my options i have changed clutches before but dont fancy an engine change so me doing the labour wouldnt be an option.

Do i get a second hand engine or a recon? and what would be the prices ?

how much should i be looking to get it fitted or would anyway on here like to come down to cardiff and fit it for me ( if so how much )

cheers guys

Jono

Get a compression test done first. Halfords sell gunsons testers for 18 quid. Post the figures on here or read the pumaracing site for guidelines.

cheapest option is to buy a 2nd hand 8v engine for 50-150 and fit it yourself

next one is to buy an engine and pay someone £250 - 500 to do it for you

after that its up to you

recon engine ?? anywhere from 600-1000 id say depending on spec

if you can change the clutch you can chuck a secondhand £50 engine in over a weekend for sure.

Just haunt the wanted ads on here and on PSOOC. Failing that try a Wanted ad on here and the PGAC.

Get motorsport news, there are lots of specialist pug rally car breakers about and it is possible to pick up rebuilt engines with very little miles on them (usually with a different cam and other work) for the price of a headgasket change at a garage.

Be warned - sometimes when doing an engine swap you may find stuff breaking or needs replacement - engine mounts is a good one if they havent been done [recently].
