Upgrades To Mi Engine

hey all - just had the Mi16 rebuilt after severe bottom end failure. To stop it happening again we are gonna do a few mods to keep an eye on things. Any information on the following would be very much appreciated:

 

- fitting oil temp gauge

- fitting oil pressure gauge

- fitting oil cooler

 

Just dont trust the std gauges so new 52mm jobs will be just the ticket. Also a decent oil cooler up front should keep temps down. The car will be track only use so temps being too low shouldnt be a problem!

 

Re the oil cooler can we pinch one from a diff car? And where does one obtain a sandwich plate etc from.

Demon Tweeks have a good selection of gauges and should be a good source for an oil cooler if you choose to buy new.

As said on here before, oil temperature shouldn't really be an issue and the need for an oil cooler even on a track car isn't so important.

 

I've had many a hairy session with little change in temperature.

 

Having the right oil and changing it regularly matters more.

 

I can't see guages stopping a big end from falling off either.

 

Was oil starvation the cause of failure?

mechanic reckons it was oil temp couple with a tired old engine really. oil cooler isnt really essential but the gauges would be good. Is it easy to fit a pressure and temp gauge to the Mi?

Are the guages on the dash working?

 

Replacing the sensors for new ones may help if the old ones are fecked.

Guages shouldn't be too hard to fit if you want new ones. 1 wire from the sensor to the guage and an earth from the guage afaik

 

 

How did the mechanic diagnose oil temperature as reason for failure? Didn't think you could.

wasnt so much a diagnosis as a feeling mate - trust him 100% tho knows the engines inside out.

 

dash gauges dont work and arent usually too accurate from what I believe so rather have some more accurate ones in. Cant afford another rebuild lol!

After market gauges are a doddle to fit. You'll just need to pick up the feed from the original senders.

Oil temp is on the bottom of the sump, oil pressure senders are on the block under the inlet manifold.

Yes.

 

 

You should try and get the dash guages and stop lights working though as it's hard to miss a big red STOP flickering on the dash even if you aren't looking directly at it.
