Got Experience With The 205td Double Fans?

Front Fans not working.

Before i take the fans out to test them phyically. I was wondering if anyone knew the electrics exactly?

The Haynes maual aint too good for this but ive got this far:

radiator temp gauge------>Relays-------->fuse----------->fans.

Would I be missing anything in this & does anyone know what each of the 3 green relays do? from right to left?

Also any advice as to where in the above circuit i should begin the investigations?

Thanks very much.

The temp switch works in 2 stages. The first stage switches the fans on at half speed, then the 2nd stage switches them both to full speed.

On slow speed one of the relays is switched on and the 2 fans are connected in series (bat-->fan1-->fan2-->earth). When the 2nd stage of the temp switch turns on the other 2 relays change the circuit so that the fans are connected in parallel:

Bat --> Fan 1 --> Earth

'----> Fan 2 --> Earth

This is the curcuit diagram:

The fans are contrrolled by the temp switch in the radiator, these have been known to fail before now but iirc there should be a three pin brown plug that splits off from the back of the temp switch plug that you can use to bridge the connectors & test your fans. Centre pin is 12v feed & each side is either low or high speed.

There is on the GTi but I can't remember if I saw one when I fitted a new rad to my TD 18 months ago.

Graham.
