Work Required For Valve Stem Seals

Recommended Posts

lordvader

Hey all.

My pug seems to be going through quite a bit of oil, and the symptoms suggest valve stem seals. Is the work required to change them specific to peugeot's (hence requiring a specialist) ?

I ask as a friend of my sister's does a lot of engine rebuilding, so I may be able to get a discount if I see him, rather than pay through the nose going to a machanic.

Would it be worth replacing any other parts while doing the seals ?

Thanks

Although people here say that it is possible to do the seals with the head on, i haven't heard of anyone in melbourne that can do it...

I don't think you will need to take it to a specialist though. I managed to get the head off my old engine, and it wasn't that difficult.

While you have the head off replace the cambelt/tensioner/waterpump etc, as the cambelt has to come off and it is stupid not to.

The annoying bit is that I had all those changed at the last service ...

I have noticed oil oozing out of the oil filter after a cold start, but I'm not sure if that will account for my loosing almost a liter of oil after 1000kms.

Any ideas how much labour will cost to change the seals ?

Lots. It's a shame you didn't get it done with the other stuff, as once the cambelt is off there isn't that much more to it. (if i remember correctly)

I think a well known mechanic (that you visited recently  ) quoted somebody i know $800+ for this - although your cambelt and stuff will be fine so that will save a little bit.

Well I got quoted on a top end rebuild (which is the worst case scenario, best case would be just the seals, and a gasket or two), and it is a bit frightening, but if it's necessary, I don't mind saving for a few months to get it done.

Since the head will be off, and advice on what else I can get done to get more out of it (without going for a full engine rebuild, which was quoted as the price I paid for the car ...) ?

I don't know much about the engine you have, although getting in touch with petert (from here and aussiefrogs) would be a start. I know a few people that have dealt with him and they swear by his work.

just done the stem oils eals on my 1.9 , head was off , which id the way its got to be done im afraid cos you need to remove the valves etc. it is fairly easy with the head off and the right tools , and the seals themself are very cheap ( well over here they are) , just use long nose pliers to pull them off.

If you have have the head off you will get a chance to clean up the head, and even lap teh valves, which is a good thing on a high mileage car.

A pug mechanic changed my dads stem seals with the head on. I'm fairly sure he took the cam out of the head. But basically he held teh valve down with a piece of string down the spark plug hole and removed the valve collets with a socket and hammer....tap tap.. He made it look very easy..

Make sure that you get whoever does this to oil the valve stem before they insert the seal. This can double the life of the seal..(most people won't bother)

If you're keen with a spanner or two, it can fairly easily be done with the head still on. Saves buggering around with head gaskets and fluids and skimming etc if it doesnt need it. Rope down the spark plug hole and leaving the valves in. Admittedly not a perfect solution but if it doesn't need the head taken off why bother.

I've written a guide in Word format for doing this. It needs a final tweak and I hope cybernck will host it on the site eventually  but if you want it soonish, drop me a PM/email. No harm in having a read.

You need to do the cambelt at the same time, and if you're at valve stem failure mileage, a belt change certainly wont be a bad thing.

Total cost was <£100 but you need to get a head on spring compressor. All the info and prices are in the guide which I can send you.

Oh up until I had done the valve stem seal change the most advanced car repair I had done was change a rad hose...
