CaM 0 Posted February 3, 2006 Hey Guys, I did a finished doing a pad change about a month and a half ago. (took 3 weeks to get the pads sorted, we can't get anything decent for gtis over here so had to get my old pads custom rebonded in mintex 1144 material) anywya, long story short, I had to guess how the pad retaining wire clip things went back in the rear. I thought I got it perfect, but driving it yesterday the pad started banging in one of the rear calipers, and both pieces of wire are gone, and the piece of metal that holds the pad in was about to fall out... I've done a search but can't pull anything up, so, would somebody be able to whip a wheel off and do a decent pic of how those clips secure on?? alternatively, is there any problem with running without them?? nowhere round here carries them, and the dealership can't find out whther they're available until tuesday
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted February 3, 2006 The pads should be held in by the metal bar & with a spring clip through to prevent it falling out same as the 1.6 GTi Bendix front calipers. I have a caliper built up downstairs iirc but not on a car, I'll take a photo later & post it up. alternatively, is there any problem with running without them?? nowhere round here carries them, and the dealership can't find out whther they're available until tuesday Problems you'll have running without them is that the pads can fall out leaving you with no brakes. Ahl 4 Posted February 3, 2006 There is a problem running without them as, as you've seen, the metal bar can come out, followed by your pads, the piston and most of your brake fluid! Can you get hold of some lockwire? this will probably be the easiest solution and more secure than the standard clips anyway.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted February 3, 2006 Ahl, there isn't enough travel afaik for the piston to come right out on rear calipers at least (or on Bendix fronts for that matter). Graham.
Rippthrough 98 Posted February 3, 2006 You can put it in 2 differnt ways accidentally though. Are you sure it's in right?
CaM 0 Posted February 3, 2006 (edited) the main pad retention bar is in, just the twon spring clips that go over the pad....... I'll take a pic of the other side when I get home from work, but i'd be surprised if it's not doing the saem. they're probaly only anti rattle clips or something.... I've checked with all the suppliers we deal with at work but nobody has them seperately, and the pad sets they have (some crap brand) don't come with them... I'v got some lockwire at home so I'll attack it with that. just leaves the problem of the other two clip things that have gone wayward Edited February 3, 2006 by CaM

If you mean the disc gets in the road, then I guess you're right. They will definitely pop out without it though and even with the disc its not risk worth taking. CaM 0 Posted February 3, 2006 for sure. i don't take risks with stuf like this.
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted February 4, 2006 I didn't mean it was worth the risk but yes the disc does stop it from coming right out, ask GTi Mad as it happened to him on track @ FCS in 2004 iirc. If the two spring clips that you mention are the ones that hook over the brake pad then yes, they are just anti-rattle springs. See if the pictures below are any good. Graham. pug309twin40s 1 Posted February 4, 2006 Graham. the long bit on them clips are supposed to hook underneath the angle bit that hooks round the pad if you see what i mean. p.s cant you order some pads from the internet in uk and get them posted to where you are. e.g needforspeed.co.uk as you cant get some proper ones where you are! tom_m 0 Posted February 8, 2006 you can pick up the retaining clips and anti rattle spring kit from halfrauds. last time i did mine they didn't ahve a 205 kit but they had another one that had exacly the same stuff in the kit (just the pad retaining bad was longer) and it did the job just fine.
