Extra Cooling

My 205, as soon as I hit a bit of traffic at the moment, goes from normal temp (bout a third up the temp gauge) to fan cut in point (3/4)

what do you guys usually do for a bit extra cooling, to combat this. manual fan switch?

30 degree celcius heat sucks... lol

It's fairly normal really, especially in your hot climate... when the fan kicks in does the temp drop back down ok?

(Sorry Jon for going against what you said!)

 

How quickly does this happen?

 

On my previous 205, the headgasket failed quiet badly and when sat in traffic the temp neadle shot up very quickly - ie sitting in traffic for a few minutes and it was near red on the temp gauge.

 

I would look at getting the head gasket checked and take a look at the rad and make sure its in good cond and not blocked.

id say the climate is the issue here rather than Hg, cheapest option would be to wire up a switch in car to put on when you see impending stationary traffic etc

after that id maybe put a TD rad on? or even a new standard rad can make all the difference

Flush the cooling system with a proprietary bottle of stuff and put a new 82 deg thermostat in, problem solved.

i guess the temperature here in hk is surely not "cold" at all. we get over 30 degree celcius during the whole summer and we also have an a/c condenser sitting between the radiator and the fans. we don't get over heating during summer under the bad traffic condition. as long as i know there are 2 different fan thermostat switches for different region (may be radiator as well, but i'm not sure).

doesn't go any hotter than the cut in point for the fan.

once it gets below that the fan cuts out. sitting in traffic for a while, it's fine water temp wise, but it's concerning that the oil temp rises due to the water heating it...

 

radiator is only a few months old, thermostat is perfect, blah blah blah

will get another fan, to fill the second shroud, and wire them up thru a relay for manual control.

 

just is concerning coz it'll be doing trackwork in near future. mate's e28 bmw heatsoaks like a mofo when he comes off the track, imagine it's not good for an engine.

 

will run with the switch for now. cheers

At the end of the day the 205 doesn't like sitting in traffice no mater what country it is... if you concerned then a switch is a great idea, as is adding a second fan to the radiator cowling, though not sure if you've got an oil cooler fitted there or not?

If the fan is cutting in and cooling then you have nothing to worry about.

Last summer I was driving abroad and the ambient temp was 37deg C, yet the oil temperature was nothing like 4 laps around a track without an oil cooler!

I get the cowlings. only one has a fan. i think the second is added with a/c

 

dunno what you other guys get but I have a water/oil oil cooler on the filter housing. everything else is U.K spec aparently...

well, for the twin fans we have in hong kong, they run the normal speed once the engine is warmed up. high speed is only for air cond is on.

 

by the way, they don't run in sequence. so, either off, low speed or high speed together.

We only have the twin fan set up on the Diesel models and any fitted with AC( although not many have that option ). What you say isn't quite true, the low and high speed will operate for either cooling or for the AC system( depending on whether the coolant gets too hot or the AC system pressure increases too much, although as soon as you turn on the AC, the fans come on at low speed regardless ).

What temperatures does your thermoswitch in the radiator switch at? or what colour is the ring on the thermoswitch?

it is a little bit different here. fans come on at low speed most of the time once the engine is running. either a/c is on or engine running hot will trigger the fans at high speed.

 

friend of mine had a different thermoswitch before and he suffered overheat problem until he has the switch changed. pug may have different setups for europe and south east asia market.

 

as long as i can remember, the very early 1.6GTi shipped to hong kong in mid 80s only had locally installed a/c, and they had serious cooling problem.

mine has those fans!

but they did sod all when the head gasket had gone im still havin slight probs now after changin it

would like to add one more info about those twin fans we have in hk. when at low fan speed, they are connected in serial, when at the high speed they are in parallel. circuit switched by relays and it is very different setup compare to any japs car.

This is the same set-up as any diesel over in the UK. Controlled by relays in a box behind the headlight.

since relays are located in a tiny sealed box, overheated badly in hk. so some of us rewired the relay box next to the aux coolant tank to give it a bigger room but i don't think you need that since you dont normally get over 27 degree celcius.

I've never heard of it being a problem in the UK, we can sometimes get temperatures up there but it is certainly unusual.
