Guest BiFf Posted January 31, 2006 Hi all, As some know I managed to batter a hole in my radiator with my last fuel filter so this and the radiator were exchanged last night for shiny new items. I've put on a Renault 19 16v oil filter (much shorter and loads of clearence now ) Anyway I get in the car to drive it to work this morning and the oil pressure seems a little high. Strange I thought but perhaps with the smaller filter and the fact the cars not been run for a few days perhaps it'll be back to where it normally is wen it's warmed up. So I park the car up at work and go do a days slog. I get back to the car this evening and theres a puddle under the car right next to where I have the oil filler breather sticking out (this breather is a temporary measure until I find a home for my catch tank). I drive the car home and get the lead light out and have a look underneath and sure enough it looks as though it's just been blowing oil and lots of it out of the breather. Does anyone have any idea why I would get such a sudden jump in oil pressure. I mean it used to spit out of the filler breather before I changed the radiator but now it practically p****s out when I drive the car. Obviously I don't want to be filling up with oil as often as I do petrol so I could do with working this out and preventing it happening. Any thoughts gents? Or is there a better way to pipe everything up and seal the system? Cheers BiFf

Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted January 31, 2006 Sure its nothing as simple as its been overfilled? I cant see a shorter filter causing any drastic increase in pressure, it probably counts for less than 2% of the oil's space.
Rob_the_Sparky 9 Posted January 31, 2006 Pretty sure Anthony used to use a Renault 19 filter for a while with no problems so I rather doubt that is your problem.
jonD6B 0 Posted January 31, 2006 The R19 16V filter may be slightly more restrictive because of it's smaller size and the fact it contains quite a large magnet (hence it's weight) but I wouldn't have thought it should make a noticable difference though. Have you modified any pipework recently?
Anthony 1,003 Posted January 31, 2006 Pretty sure Anthony used to use a Renault 19 filter for a while with no problems so I rather doubt that is your problem. Works fine and no obvious difference to using a Peugeot one (aside from less dents in the radiator ) hence I recommended that Biff fit one. If you're getting oil being blown out of the breather then that suggests that something is causing excessive crackcase pressure, although that should be independant of oil pressure. Could you have overfilled the oil possibly, as if you overfill it enough then that can cause oil to get pumped out through the breathers. Did you use a different type/grade of oil to before, as that can effect oil pressure?
Guest BiFf Posted February 1, 2006 It's always blown out of the breather to be honest it just seems to blow more out now and the only things that have changed have been the filter (thats the oil filter ) and the radiator which is why I thought this could be aggravating the initial problem. Haven't changed grades of oil or anything at all really. I'm pretty sure it wasn't over filled at all I'm very careful when checking and filling the oil and other fluid levels. Any ideas what can cause excessive crankcase pressure, or anything I can check ? I've been using 10w40 in the car and have since I bought it. Does that sound about right or should I be looking at something thinner ? I hate not knowing this stuff. Ask me a qquestion about car stereos and I'll probably know the answer, mechanics I'm still a bit rubbish at really lol. BiFf
richard 0 Posted February 4, 2006 Perfecto had something like this on his...it would just blow oil out. It was down to the filter itself. That may be worth a look if its not happened before.
Wurzel 16 Posted February 5, 2006 I've been trying to visualize the oil path and seeing how the filter could cause problems. I can't unfortunately As it seems to be happening since changing the filter, then I guess it may be duff but I've certainly had no problems with all of mine I've fitted since installing the Mi. If anything, it's in the wrong place to give a high oil pressure reading if it's causing problems (ie before the sensor). A pressure build up would be between the pump and filter, no where else. The pressure relief valve would operate as normal and circumvent the rest of the system. No extra pressure would build up within the sump from what I can make out. Are all the breather pipes positioned so as not be be kinked at all? I know the main oil filler pipe can over time perish and collapse in on itself. Other than a blocked breather pipe, overfilling, or incorrect routing, I can't see what else would cause the problem.
