Guest clarky205 Posted January 30, 2006 Do any of you guys know anything about the splitter plate that goes in the downpipe? How long is it? what happens if you make it longer/shorter? does every 205 1.6 gti have them? Any ifno/pictures welcome!!
bren_1.3 1 Posted January 30, 2006 IIRC the splitter plate that you refer to actually makes the exhaust a 4-2-1 setup. all 1.6 gti's should have this plate in them, unless the downpipe has been replaced by a pattern part that doesnt have the plate in it. making it longer / shorter would probably do very little to engine performance. best to leave it alone unless you want a 4-1 exhaust setup. jonah 1 Posted January 30, 2006 Yep, don't know how much power would be lost without it but can only assume that it was designed that way for a reason! A genuine pipe should have the divider for the first 2 feet or so of pipe, right up until the pipe narrows underneath the car. It is made of two back-to-back D-shape sections. I have seen pattern pipes with no divider at all, and worse, one with a steel flap extending about 4" into the pipe, tacked on with 2 little welds at the top end. Having seen even the genuine pipe burn away its dividing wall, I dread to think how long those flimsy little welds would have lasted, and where the flap would have ended up lodged when it broke off!! Took that one back for a refund...

Took that one back for a refund... That flap falls down the pipe about mid way, rattling constantly and making everyone look. It will also have you check every last bolt on the car, tearing your hair out because you cant find this rattle thats drove you mad for the last month. The last place you would think to look is in the exhaust downpipe. Its happened to me.
Guest clarky205 Posted January 30, 2006 Thanks guys, not sure if mine has one in or not will wait and see when i swap the engine over for the new one i'm building at the moment!!! If not i will either change the exhaust or do something!! Do any of you know if the Group N Systems (OMP/pugsport etc) have them in? If so which system do you recomend? The car is a Group N (205 challenge spec) by the way
Guest Ictoan Posted January 30, 2006 (edited) Clarky, I purchased a Grp N system from Special Tuning and it didn't include the down pipe. Bought a standard one from Partco with the splitter and the 'N' system fitted straight on. Tim Edited January 30, 2006 by Ictoan
Guest clarky205 Posted January 31, 2006 Thanks Tim, I will look into it, found a group N exhaust for £105 new!! will wait and see what my downpipe looks like when i take the engine out!!
pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted January 31, 2006 This split should run the full length of the downpipe until the reduction in diameter before the join to the centre pipe like jonah said. If you don't get the correct design best ones other than a new one from Peugeot are Arvin, if you canget hold of one. They are the same company as Bosal & Timax iirc but the downpipe is different from all of them & only the Arvin has been proven to have the right design. Graham. Guest clarky205 Posted February 7, 2006 Roughly how much torque and power would be lost if the splitter plate is not in place? I'm 90% sure that mine has not got one, did an event at the weekend and it just seemed slow to pull out of corners!! Think a new exhaust is in order!!! pug_ham 245 3 Cars Posted February 7, 2006 Roughly how much torque and power would be lost if the splitter plate is not in place? This has recently been under debate on this topic but not much. AFAIK the group A system has a longer splitter as well as a larger bore. Graham.
