Upgrading The Fuel Pump

I need to upgrade my fuel pump and am just enquiring whether anyone on the forum has upgraded theres.

The two options are:

An up rated fuel pump that replaces the original and sits inside the tank. Cost around £100.

An up rated fuel pump that sits inline with the original. For rally regulations I dont think the fuel pump can go inside the cabin, so it will need to take up room in the engine bay (A big negative). Such examples cost upwards of £150 from the US.

 

I know that the standard fuel pump flows enough for 250 bhp so please no replies saying why!

Surely its better to have a single item to go wrong then a combination of 2.

 

I'd be tempted by the in-tank solution assuming all other issues are equal.

 

Out of curiosity why! :D

The engine will cause the fuel pump to be on the very limit, when fitted .So i would prefur to sort it out now. When the car is being assembled.

Go with a second pump... you can then add in a surge tank as well and precent any fuelling issues :D

How about two 405 Mi pumps in parrallel?

 

Working ones should be cheap and pretty easy to get hold of.

 

If you run two on seperate circuits, coudln't you have a light on each to show its live - so if one pump stops running you'll at least be able to get off the stage by running the car on part throttle.

 

Ignore me if this sounds stupid!

Yes you will... 1 pump to get the fule from the fuel tank to the surge tank, and one to take the fuel from the surge tank to the filter/injectors...

 

It's usual practice to use the standard in-tank pump to fill the surge tank, then somthing like a facet to take it from the surge tank.

A big pump inline with the OE pump would be well pointless. You'll only ever flow as much as the smaller one can move.

 

Before deciding whether you really do need a bigger pump measure the ouput of the one you have. Approx 0.5 litres per minute per 100 bhp plus say a 20% safety margin for wear and tear or jetting that's a bit on the rich side. OE pumps are usually ok for up to about 300 bhp on most vehicles.

totally right except the swirl pot/surge tank is filled by a low pressure pump eg the facet and then the high pressure pump is fed from there. It wouldn't work the other way round.

I mentioned in an earlier thread you can just stuff you tank full of fuel foam - it's easy and cheaper than pumps and pots. I can run below a 1/4 with no surge with this solution.

Thanks for the advice veloce200. My solution will be to upgrade the in-tank pump and baffle the tank to prevent fuel starvation. Where did you buy the foam from?
