Power Problems

Hi folks,

I've noticed over the past day or so a problem has developed on my 205. I'm not entirely sure how to describe the problem, but I'll try my best...

I first noticed the problem the other day on a driving lesson (yes, the instructor lets me use my car). I was going round a corner and up hill when the car started to splutter. It seemed like it does when the fuel has just about run out. The fuel was low (although the amber light wasn't on) so I just put it down to that and stopped off at a petrol station.

Now today, when I was driving the car with my brother-in-law sitting beside me, the power seemed to completely go. I was going down hill, the engine was running but when I put my foot on the accelerator I didn't get any revs at all, both with my foot on and off the clutch. I phoned a mate (Pugsport on the forums) and he suggested to check the connections to the coil, the fuse box on the slam panel etc which all appear to be okay. I assumed it couldn't be the lack of fuel this time as there is half a tank of fuel in there.

After checking the connections, I took the car for another run and it is better but doesn't seem 100%, it's almost if it is struggling to get the power up, I guess the only way I can describe it is when I put my foot down it doesn't accelerate as fast and feels a little bit like its running low on fuel.

I'm going to get some carb cleaner and try cleaning out the AFM at the weekend as I've seen suggested on other posts. The HT leads are also fairly new (about 4 months old I think).

Can anyone suggest any other things I should be looking at? I'm not sure when the air/fuel/oil filters were last changed, so could this be a good idea to change them?

You said your HT leads are only 4 months old but my Bosch ones were only that old when one of them completely corroded and caused the same symptoms as what your car has. I swapped them for OE leads and the problem was cured.

If not, like you said, change the fluids and filters and also change the dizzy cap and rotor arm as these can also cause misfires

Thats interesting. I'd have thought the HT leads would last a bit longer. I'm not sure what make they are, I'll check tomorrow. Where you say you've replaced the leads for OE leads, do you mean they're manufactured by OE, or does this mean they're original Peugeot replacements?

I'll also check the dizzy cap & rotor arm tomorrow, I don't think these have been replaced since I got the car (can't remember if I did them along with the HT leads or not).

I had this when my coil was tracking and earthing to the body work rather then via the king lead. Clean up the coil to make sure this isn't happening. It sounds like either an ignition fault or the tachometric relay.

Tachometric relay can also cause identical symptoms (if its the coil you'll likely suffer from stuttering before it comes to a halt).

Okay, I'll take a look. Where would I find the Tachometric relay?

I haven't noticed any stuttering before the car comes to a halt. When I'm coming to some traffic lights in 3rd gear for instance, the car will not judder or stall when going at slow speeds, well it won't until I'm at near enough a complete standstill.

Yeah they were from Peugeot. They cost an arm and a leg and are probably only as good as some of the others on the market but I wanted leads that I could trust for longer than 4 months!

I'll have to get a quote from the local Peugeot dealer then. I'll take a look at the car later.

About £40ish IIRC - I bought a set for exactly the same reasons and haven't had any problems since.

They even come complete with black elasticated bag to cover dizzy (the one that goes brittle and splits after about 2 weeks  )

Mart

Hmm, I think it'll have to wait for a day or so then. I've got some carb cleaner from GSF today and replacement drive shaft (hopefully that should get rid of that annoying gear stick wobble).

It's probably a bit late to do anything this evening, not to mention I haven't got all the right tools to do the job here.

Hi,

This might be totally wide of the mark but I had a similar problem with A Fiat Uno years ago (look it was my first car ok  )

Basically what was happening with that, was the breather off the fuel tank was blocked so basically as the fuel was pumped out it was pulling all the air out of the tank as well. Result, a vacuum which meant the pump couldn't draw fuel from the tank anymore. This lead to a steady decrease in power and ultimately to the engine cutting out. I temporarily solved this by changing the original fuel cap (with a seal) to one of those green push in plastic jobs. This allowed the tank to breathe and stopped the problem until I stripped it down and unblocked the breather. I'm not that experienced with the 205s fuelling system so this may not be able to happen on a Gti, but thought I'd suggest it as a possibility and give everyone a good laugh about my little Uno.

Thats not so bad... My first proper car (not including the X reg Mk1 Fiesta I had when I was originally learning to drive) was a 1.3 Lada Samara. It was given to me and was a great first car. Not too fast that I'd write it off and it could take lots of stick. Even had a snazzy brown interior with a black strip (electrical tape) stuck on the steering wheel. My second car was a nice white 1.9GTI, unfortanately when I first got it, I was just not very good at reversing and ended up reversing into a wall. I'm still not sure how I didn't see it! :-o

I guess it's worth a try if all else fails. It's not been too bad today. Doesn't feel 100% and it juddered a bit when cold this morning, but it certainly seemed better than it has been.
