Crank Wheel

Recommended Posts

309PUG

Hi,

Two questions really:-

This is for people with XU 8v engines.

1. How do you fit the multi toothed wheel to the crank, do you simply rely on the clamping pressure from the crankshaft bolt/thick washer ? or some sort of dowel / pin ??? what has eveyone else done.

2. Can someone in 'simplistic' terms describe exactly how and where the missing tooth is positioned when mounted, and is this a critical position or is it +/- a couple of mm ??

Thanks

Chris

The wheel ive got is located by a small key, it protrudes into crank cut out. then the pulley is bolted back on top.

On mine the missing tooth is 9 teeth on from the sensor at tdc. The sensor sits in the middle of the 9 tooth. Its not critical because the sensor is on a sliding bracket for getting the timing spot on. When moved about 5mm either way it makes about 5 degrees, if you think that the gap between each tooth is 10 degress.

You say your sensor sits in sliding bracket, where did you get that from ??

thanks for the pics.

Assuming the key way on the crank is in the same position on all 8v's then your photo is a good guide where the cut out key slot needs to be in relation to the missing tooth ??

PS part no. for the sensor bracket would help please.

Because of a mis-spent youth my memory is very bad and have just realised that the trigger wheel actually bolts down on top of the alternator pulley, not the other way round B)

Sorry to be a pain in the bum, but it looks to me as if the boss and crank wheel are keyway'd together and collectively only rely on clamping pressure from the crank bolt and thick washer. In other words the boss is un necessary so long as the cranckwheel is of the correct diameter to fit on crank shaft. Do you aggree ??

I thought the idea was that the boss replaces the thick washer on the end of the crank?

Hopefully i can show this clear enough and explain what the score is :o

Here is a picture of the bottom pully, if you look to the left you can see the two bolt holes where the senor bracket attaches.

This next picture shows that there is a recess from the face of the pulley to the end of the crank. The boss and key go through the trigger wheel and sit in this recess.

After locating the boss and key in the recess the pulley bolt is refitted

Sorry i cant show you the wheel on the pulley but they are 80miles apart.

Once again sorry for the quality of picture :D

Should also add that the boss, key and wheel are all tight as hell to fit together ( hammer job  )
