Knocking From Nsf When Going Over Small Bumps

Recommended Posts

adam_young

This is similar to what some other people have experienced, but I just want to confirm I am looking at the right area's.

So far I have replaced the droplinks and the top mounts (bearings and bushes). New droplinks did cure the OS knocking, but the NS remained.

Searching through other topics I think the area's I need to look at are:

Subframe bolts

Steering rack

Anything else? The droplinks were not Pug ones, but I am reluctant to buy another one when the old one has only been on for approx 1500 miles (plus it didn't cure the fault in the first place).

How do I check the steering rack?

I guess the next thing for me to check is the subframe bolts - If they are seized up does that mean that they couldn't have worked loose?

Cheers.

After droplinks, the most likely cause (in my experience) is the bottom arm balljoints

Does it make the same noises whilst moving the steering when the car's at a standstill? If so, you can trace the problem component fairly easily by getting under the car and feeling for what's worn whilst an assistant rocks the s/wheel for you

try the ball joint on the end of the wishbone the hub sometimes wears out and will feel tight but wont be and the tapered pin will woble inside

if that make any sense

Sounds like whats going on with my pug.

My problem is a worn bush on the steering rack.

try seeing if theres any play in the steering. then check the rack for movement. just try moving it with ur hand.

Could possibly be wishbones, almost certainly if you've replaced them with pattern parts recently - my wishbone bushes have gone and the main difference I've noticed between this and drop links is that the steering twitches and pulls really badly over uneven surfaces whereas droplinks just knock. I also get a knock when changing gear, funnily you don't notice it when backing off/putting on the power.

I had a similar problem when one of the bushes on the PAS ram fall apart.

Mine is making similar noise, turns out it the steering rack itself, well thats what the MOT tester said. im guessing the track rod end or the bush in the track rod.

Either way it sucks!

Looking at the last 4 posts there have been 4 different cases... wishbones, PAS bushes, steering rack and driveshaft!! It's gonna be one of those things where you will end up having to replace things until you find what it is, not great and can get expensive :o

You know I reckon its the steering rack. My Passat developed a knocking and you could feel it through the steering wheel. That turned out to be the bolt securing the near side of the rack working loose.

How hard is it to check the rack? How hard is it to replace?

Power steering, bastid. the Subframe needs dropping down, and all the pipes make things a pain in the rear.

Manual, not too bad. couple hours work.

non PAS racks not difficult or expensive to replace

But are you sure it's not the bottom arm balljoint?

Always the first thing to check after droplinks imo

Wear shows itself in allowing you to move the pin up and down in the balljoint - sometimes difficult to be certain of without first disconnecting the pin from the hub carrier
