Oil Surge

Recommended Posts

Right, ive finally decided to get my MI built after sitting in pieces in my shed for a few months, only concern being the dreaded oil surge...

After reading a hell of a lot of previous threads, ive decided the cheapest solution is to go for the S16 sump with trap door using the 1.9 spacer plate for extra oil capacity, and the oil pump baffle and windage tray. Reason being S16's(in 306's) dont seem to surge that bad from my experiance, though that is from road use, and having more oil capacity can not really be a bad thing from what i can see.

So my questions are(which i could'nt see from search's are.... how can i get the oil pump pick up lower for the deeper sump? Petert was talking about offering spacers in a previous thread but im in the uk! Anyone do anything simular over here?

Next question is, what oil pump shall i use? XU10 or XU9, i understand the XU10 operates at higher pressure but i cant see that would be any advantage to surge, or indeed anything.

Any advice on any of the above would be apreciated

thanks James.

I don't know if they're exactly the same - but the alloy sump with aircon fitting for my XU10 8 valve also has the trap door fitted. This may make your search for a second hand sump a lot broader than just looking for an S16 one. Don't buy a new one from pug - it stung me £150 when I had to a few years back!!!

Hope that helps you a bit

1. cut and shut the pickup - you need a TIG welder

2. add a spacer in the pickup head - as I do, CNC machined

3. add a spacer between pump and block - you'll need a longer chain

If your engineering skills are limited, no 3 is the easiest option. Or I can supply a semi-finished spacer (cheap to send via mail).

All XU10's, steel or alloy sumps have trapdoors in them afaik.
