KaspaCti 0 Posted January 19, 2006 Hi, my first post, so hope it's not to stupid a question! I have a problem with the gears on my '87 1.6 CTi. When I'm driving at 55mph or more in 5th or if I accelerate quickly in 5th the box jumps out of gear. All the other gears are ok. Anybody got any ideas on possible causes / solutions? The box is a BE1 with the lift up reverse. (starting to get the hang of all these pug terms now, I may be turning into an anorak Many thanks Sean
richard 0 Posted January 21, 2006 if its jumping out of gear when under load (accelerating) then i would suspect the gearbox. What happens in the other gears? 2nd or 3rd are the most abused gears.
KaspaCti 0 Posted January 21, 2006 Hi Richard, It only jumps out of gear in 5th. All the other gears are ok even under acceleration. It looks like it might be replacement gearbox time Thanks for your help Sean
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted January 21, 2006 If it's 5th gear thats easy to check, Drain the oil and take the tin cover off the end and you can check it over
KaspaCti 0 Posted January 21, 2006 If it's 5th gear thats easy to check, Drain the oil and take the tin cover off the end and you can check it over Miles Thanks for the advice. Any tips on exactly what to check for, is it obvious if the gear or synchro are worn enough for the box to jump out of gear? Cheers Sean
returnofjim 0 Posted January 21, 2006 I used to have a similar problem with a 205 1.1, this car was owned from new by me, it did it after a few thousand miles, it went back to pug a coulple of times and even they couldnt suss it, after a while it just stopped doing it. How often does it jump out of gear in yours?, mine was only now and then. James
ablister 31 Posted January 21, 2006 the detent spring stops gears jumping out so maybe it's that
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted January 21, 2006 Remove the end cover and you'll see 5th gear, You can check for any remains as the oil way in the cover holds it well, Failing that undo the nut on 5th Gear with a Air Gun then remove the Pin and clip (If there) on the main selector shaft and the gear slides off allowing you to check the syc and bush and or replace the Spring clip as said

I've got a spare gearbox so when I'm feeling brave and the rain stops I'll try swapping them over. Thanks for your help. Sean the detent spring stops gears jumping out so maybe it's that Cheers ablister, I'll have a look, want to check gear linkage anyway as a mate told me it could be a crap connection there too. Also got a spare box so I'll try swapping if all else fails. If I see any remains I'll swap for the spare gearbox I've got, and investigate the original when I get time. Unfortunately the spare gearbox is on a CTi I bought for spares, oh well there goes another weekend Sean
hengti 2 Posted January 22, 2006 Mine went a few years ago - same symptoms Can't remember the diagnosis (selector forks??) - but the only remedy was apparently a 'new' box
