Starting Problem...

Right... since iv had my 205 (5ish months...) its had the same old starting problem...

 

done a search but everything that people have suggested i have tried :)

 

I have tried a few bits and Anthony off here had the car for 2 weeks and its still there... so far between us we have tried: 3 fuel pumps, fuel rail, fuel pressure regulator and a few other bits (ant will give details?)

 

the basic problem is that if you leave the car for more than 5 minutes it just turns over for 4 or 5 seconds and then fires up.

 

since ant has had it the problem has been much better with it starting on the button at least every other time, but the problem is still lurking :(

 

any ideas?

My sisters 106 xsi does the same thing, but it still starts so i cant be arsed to try fixing it. Doesnt matter that much does it?

ha ha - thats what everyone else who dont know the answer says :) id prefer to fix the problem ta :angry:

 

no it dont matter THAT much but iv spent a rather large amount of money on it since september and i would like to sort the problem :(

 

any actualy suggestions?

In my experience of 8v's its something related to the engine management. It just takes a little while to react. My 1.6 was exactly the same, sometimes it'd start on the button, sometimes it would labour into life. Changing the starter motor for something chunkier would probably help.

hmm i had this on my gti, after the tachy relay broke as i was driving along, after that it took about 3-6 cranks to fire up so its gotta be fuel related maybe the pump is weak?

tried the tachy relay last time i was down 205 parts - no luck :)(

 

tried 3 fuel pumps... one from batfink (was duff) one from 205 parts (was duff) and one from kates car that we know worked fine and started on the bottom... that improved the problem to an extent but not totaly fixxed it...

Like DrSuess mentions above, I'm sure its an engine management thing, as I had very similar problems with my 8v engine. The problem continued with the Mi16, when it was running the 8v management still. Since converting to motronic (Mi16) management, the problem had completely disappeared, including the "clicky" starter issues. I'd tried for ages to sort it myself previously, without success.

The problem with the first two fuel pumps was a broken one-way valve, so it wasn't holding fuel pressure with the engine off. With no fuel pressure, even when the pump did a self prime, you'd still have to sit there cranking the engine over for the pump to build up enough pressure to start it.

 

Is the problem *exactly* the same with the new pump Ash, only intermittently rather than each and everytime? Or are the symptoms different to a degree? Is there any pattern to when it will and when it won't start, or is it apparently completely random?

 

Oh, and are you doing as I said and atleast allowing the pump to prime (leaving the ignition on for a few moments before cranking the starter) or still putting the key in and turning it straight to start?

if i leave it for 10-15 seconds before starting it will *sometimes* start first time - but not always...

 

the fault has deffo got a bit better - but having spent roughly £2k on the car in 4/5 months i would like it to start properly on the button :)

 

if you have been running for the car it will start straight away after a few minutes (filling up with petrol for xample) but if you leave it for any period of time then it will not start on th button. so this leads me to believe that there is a fueling problem - nothing to do with electrics or starter motor??

 

i havnt replaced the fuel filter yet - could this be the problem?!

no i did fuel filter it still was the same, would a new pump and the 90odd quid they cost fix this problem?

I doubt its pump if youve tried 3. You mention fuel rail but what about injectors? Could be one leaking and the pressures going out that way. Have you checked over all unions on hoses etc? could be a pinhole somewhere.

Also try a different coil.
