jshep205gti 3 Posted January 17, 2006 Evening people! The engine change is complete! (I put a reconned 1.6 engine into my 1.6 car) I can't believe it! Pulled my car into my mates garage last Friday night and now it's running around with a different engine in! I really didn't expect it to go as smoothly as it did. First turn of the key with new engine and it was just needing the fuel (fuel filter change).... on the 4th turn it just started... and drove..... and now it is just sitting outside again. That is without doubt the best feeling of the conversion, the key turning and the engine just starts!! So now, MY car has: new engine mounts, new clutch, clutch bearing, fuel filter, waterpump, cambelt, alt belt, plugs, leads, dizzy/arm, valve stem seals are done, head gasket done, loads of new pipes and jubliee clips, all fluids are fresh..... I cant believe how much fun and rewarding changing an engine is!!!! Thanks to people on here because I don't think it'd be the same without all the help!!! jshep205gti 3 Posted January 18, 2006 Yeah I do feel so good right now. Don't want to mess it up now though, so what final checks do I need to be doing tomorrow before I drive it? Check oil and collant levels....what else? Pugnut - no, just unplugged everything and labeled it, then plugged it back today. I wouldn't say they were in bad condition... just dirty on the outside. how can I protect them?? Oh, another question I have is what to do about the front bumper mounts on the side? get new ones cos mine are sooooo rusty and barely holding the bumper on or bodge it on? And another question: there is a wire with a plug coming from near the flywheel which my mate reckons could be a flywheel sensor... it wasn't connected to anything when we removed the old engine, but we still moved it onto the new engine but didn't plug it into anything.... what is it? Thanks!! Shep
Pugnut 9 1 Cars Posted January 18, 2006 brake cleaner and a scotch pad is good for cleaning up , although you'll not really manage to get right into the important bits . DC4 silicone grease is the daddy for waterproofing and protecting but vaseline will do the same job.
DrSeuss 0 Posted January 18, 2006 Contact cleaner and white grease from maplins also works a treat.
pug_ham 244 3 Cars Posted January 18, 2006 And another question: there is a wire with a plug coming from near the flywheel which my mate reckons could be a flywheel sensor... it wasn't connected to anything when we removed the old engine, but we still moved it onto the new engine but didn't plug it into anything.... what is it?If it has a brown plug & three wires going into it you needn't worry, your mate is right its a flywheel sensor. It is un-used on the Jetronic system & only plugs into the Peugeot diagnostic's machine at the garage. Quite often they are melted from where they have fallen down the back of the engine against the exhaust manifold & removed completely. Graham.

jshep205gti 3 Posted January 20, 2006 Engine is still going! Slight water leak but I did up some bolts tighter (!) I'd like to get a compression check done... is this expensive to have done at a garage? If all is ok, I'd like them to time it up... I have no timing light. Does it take long? Or could I just do it myself by ear? And something else that I need to find out is when to re-torque the head bolts. After now many miles? Does anything else need tightening? Thank you muchly J
