SamGTi 0 Posted January 17, 2006 I took my car to the garage today for a replacement front n/s wheel bearing. When I went to pick the car up, the job wasn't finished because the hub which the bearing sits in has split and was unsafe for re-use on my car. When I say the hub, I mean the cast metal unit which the hub flange, shock and track-control arm all fit into. It was where the track control arm attatches that the split was. The fork-shaped prongs which the ball-joint of the arm is clamped into had cracked and a piece of it was missing. The garage said that re-fitting this would be very unsafe and they advised me to get a new complete hub but they quoted me £97 (inc. VAT) from Peugeot. Can't I get these from anywhere else? £97 seems a bit much. Or, even better, does anybody have a second hand hub I could buy off them on here? It doesn't matter about the quality of the wheel bearing as I have a new one waiting to be fitted anyway. Thanks in advance for any help. I have also posted a 'Wanted' post in the wanted section. DrSeuss 0 Posted January 17, 2006 a number of cars share the same hubs if you can get down a scrap yard. Most citroen zx's and 306's, just be sure to check the stub pin dia. where the ball joint goes into the hub, these are prone to bellmouthing. Also later model 306's have a different size stub pin so won't fit a 205 (the changeover seems around 2000)
SamGTi 0 Posted January 17, 2006 Are the 1.6 hubs the same as the 1.9's then? I just need one urgently as I have no car without a wheel!
DrSeuss 0 Posted January 17, 2006 No. Different wheel offset.
Anthony 1,003 Posted January 18, 2006 Base model, 1.6 GTi, and 1.9 GTi hub are all different. Most XU engined 309's have the same hubs as 1.9 GTi's, and as said, many 306's and ZX's also have hubs that are the same fitment (slightly different hub carrier design, but still interchangeable as far as I'm aware)
jonnie205 1 Posted January 18, 2006 Right i would say for 95% that the damage casued to that hub will have been done by the garage. If the hub is not properly mounted on the press then damage can happen when force is applied. That steering arm is often used to support the hub on the press and if the mechanic was a bit gun ho it is very likely that he damaged the hub. I have seen this done with hubs before, remeber that the 10 ton force it can take to remove bearings is a lot to ask of a cast steering arm. I may be wrong but i can see no other way it could have happended
SamGTi 0 Posted January 19, 2006 The damage may well have been done by a garage at some point but not whilst I have had the car. It has been like that in the 2 years of my ownership because I noticed the problem when I changed the track control arm. But true, the damage could have been done by another garage prior to me owning the car
rossimura 0 Posted January 19, 2006 I'm sure I fitted a hub off a diesel C15 Citroen van, to a 205Gti once. Similar to 309's I think, as I remember 205 diesels are the same as C15 vans. Might be worth a look at a scrap yard should be plenty of these about. Correct me if I'm wrong people
