Do The Block Usually Get Distorted When Spinning A Shell?

Recommended Posts

Just wondered if the main bearing faces in the block usually get distorted / deformed when spinning big end shells? (Out of line is maybe a better word for this...).

The rod was a little rough in the bearing surfaces and it have been handed over to my enginebuilder and he's repairing it for 40£.

Does any of you have experience with spinning shells? Have it usually just been to put a new crank in and fire it up?

couldn't tell, as it never happened to me on a MI-block exactly,

but if it's not accompanied by overheating, then chances are the block should be OK.

Being an alloy block, however, AT LEAST you should bring it to a good engine machine shop to have it checked for in-line "trueness" of bearing nests.

cheers & good luck

Ok, guess it's ok then.

It's a iron XU10J4TE by the way, and afaik it was not overheated.

Hmm, so if the conrod gets blue, there is a good chance the main bearing face in the block is damaged as well?

Not sure, but he said I should check it for straightness, in-line-ness on the main bearings.

Hope that my local workshop can do that.

The mains caps usually don't move around too much. They're one of the most reliable parts of an Mi16. You could certainaly spin a big end, yet have 5 perfect mains bearings. They will distort from heat however. I have a block that's been in an engine fire and it's unfortunately scrap metal, even though it looks perfect. The mains bores are oval and the block is soft. I'm hoping one day the cost of having it re-heat treated and tunnel bored will be less than a 2nd hand block. I also recently had to get a block tunnel bored as some idiot in a previous rebuild "filed" one of the mating cap surfaces.
