Ratteling Noise !?

Recommended Posts

Guest Peugeot Sport 309

Hi guys,

When i put my car (309 GTi 16) in neutral and let the clutch up i hear a ratteling noise.

When i press the clutch peddle back in, it disapears.

Can anyone tell me where this ratteling noise is coming from? I suspect something to do with clutch ofcourse.

What is needed to fix this and what do you think this would cost?

Thanks for your help.

Glenn.

Hey,

I had this on my 205 Rallye.

The mechanic said it was to do with the gearbox rather than the clutch, and advised just to keep going until the gearbox breaks completely - although it was annoying and embarrasing.

That will be your clutch release bearing rattling... not terminal but also suggests a replacement is worth doing soon though :)

As Jon says its your release bearing, buy yourself a new clutch kit and it will come with it, they start to rattle when the bearing drys out, then its just the fun task of taking the box off :)

if the "rattling" is only when the clutch is UP in neutral the i would suggest it's the input shaft bearing, as the release bearing is not being used, and it would also make the noise when the clutch pedal is to the floor if the release bearing was at fault. the only reason IMO that you dont hear it ratling whilst driving is because of 1.the noise of the engine etc etc, and 2. when you put it in gear the whole box is taken to the end of its backlash stopping anything rattling.

does it leak oil at all?

I agree with Simon, it could be the input shaft bearing.

Had the same problem on my mums old 309 SRI & that had to have a recondition gearbox.

I think the release bearing makes a noise when the car is in gear and moving doesnt it?

It shouldn't unless it is near death imo.

Mine's always rattled when the pedal is not pressed down - the release bearing isn't exactly tightly fitted on the arm and I've found they always go quiet when the clutch pedal is pressed (thats with 3 different gearboxes being fitted to it 2 rebuilt).
