Hi,

Ive had the sump of to fit an uprated spring to the oil pump, come to replace the sump and just noticed that 2 of the sump bolts are shorter than the rest, can anyone enlighten me as to where they go ? I know that 4 of them are cap heads and I know where they go, it's just these 2 little blighters.

Just took my sump off and to my surprise they were all the same length.

I don't really think it matters too much, however I believe the shorter ones go at end near flywheel,

Maybe screw them in tentatively with sump off and see how far in they go, only other place looks like might need shorter bolt is under oil cooler/filter.

Sorry i couldn't be more certain.

Regards

Geoff

Don't those 2 go in the sump spacer. There's 2 recessed bolts holes in the spacer, and I believe those 2 bolts hold it on while you fit the sump.

Is this for an mi or 8v?

The 2 odd ones go into the end main bearing cap, But they do all fit as many people get this wrong without knowing so well spotted

Chris, the end cap is on the flywheel side. Those 2 short bolts are the inner 2 on the sump.

It is possible to use the wrong length bolts there and go into the cap, damaging it and possibly the oil seal too. Make a note and be careful.

I've taken a look at my sump baffle too mate. And I was right, the baffle sits between the 3rd and 4th holes from the nearside. It fits closer to 4th hole, just by the side of the drain hole. Thus causing no trouble.

Thanks Kyri, however I'm even more confused, where you say the 2 short bolts should go is where I removed the cap head screws from ? You say 'inner' is this on the short side of the sump near the fly wheel or the first to holes in from the fly wheel end on the long side of the sump side nearest the front ARB.
