PsychoSimon 0 Posted January 14, 2006 hi guys i was just wondering if it would work mounting an mi upright? I'm looking into building a comp safari lada niva to race in over the winter, and people have put the 405 diesel engines onto the standard 'box so as they are xu (i think?) the mi shouldnt be too hard to get in, providing it wont starve itself of oil!! i have a 2 pint accusump which would help i guess? cheers guys, Regards, Simon
stew205 17 Posted January 14, 2006 The engine should be tilted back 30 degrees. When mounted normally like this the base of the sump is around about level, if you were to mount it level then the sump would slop down towards the front (moving the oil away from the pump). Not something you want even with an accusump. Orthough I have no experience of these. The exhaust cam sits in a bath of oil also when tilted 30 degrees, leveling the engine will effect this and subsiquently the oil return at the back of the head. Thanks Stew
PsychoSimon 0 Posted January 14, 2006 feck. thats that one out of the window then. i could get round the sump but i didnt think about the exhaust cam. cheers mate. may have to use an XE vaux engine then booooooo! lol
Ryan 99 Posted January 14, 2006 (edited) Doesn't the diesel engine also tilt back by the same amount anyway? So if that fits then the mi can't be much more difficult. Edited January 14, 2006 by RyanMoore
stew205 17 Posted January 14, 2006 Maybe you could use a spare spray bar from the inlet side for the exhaust cam? Even if you could get this to work then the oil return may still be a problem.
Richie-Van-GTi 71 2 Cars Posted January 14, 2006 the dturbo sits at the same angle as an MI engine, check how they mounted then the MI can go in the same.
PsychoSimon 0 Posted January 14, 2006 the one i saw was mounted straight. the sump has to be modified anyway to accomodate the front diff so the pickup can easily be changed as well. the 8v diesel obviously doesnt have the oil drainage problem that i might get with the mi. are there spray bar mounts on the exhaust side of the headin the mi or would they be easy to put in? i could possibly open out drainage holes in the head maybe? what do you guys think? i'm gonna study some photos of a head if i can find some
base-1 17 Posted January 14, 2006 I have a dry sump setup that was used in a single seater hill climber Mi16 - the engine was mounted dead upright - you could buy it if you wanted and it should be alright...?
PsychoSimon 0 Posted January 14, 2006 how much do you want for it mate? im not looking into spending mega bucks as its only a lada at the end of the day lol. i'm more interested in whether you know if the rest of the engine was standard or not?
DrSeuss 0 Posted January 14, 2006 Fit an xe and be done with it. Only in extreme circumstances like btcc cars are mi16's sat upright.
Ryan 99 Posted January 14, 2006 The mi head has spraybars fitted over both cams, but the one over the exhaust doesn't actually have any holes in so it does nothing. It would be a simple job to make a couple of pin holes in it to provide oil for the exhaust cam.
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted January 15, 2006 Got this from another thread and you'll see that the engine is mounted upright in a 406 Touringcar. http://www.mobisux.com/album/uploads/16196...stenginebay.jpg
Hilgie 16 2 Cars Posted January 15, 2006 I checked some sites as well, and it seems the engine sits under the same 30 degree angle as it does in a Pug.
PsychoSimon 0 Posted January 15, 2006 that's interesting! the one i saw was mounted upright, but it was in a RHD one, which would mean the master cylinder and servo etc will get in the way. possibly also the steering box. i could overcome these though i'm sure. if i put a landy type axle under it (and the back also obviously) and then the steering issue is eliminated, and also the sump. a remote m/c is easy enough to do..... cheers guys. watch this space for a 160bhp lada lol regards, Simon

Not really lol, it was on a 1.6 bottom end (regs) with lightened crank, rods and flywheel, custom forged pistons, custom piper cams and valve gear etc, thats all I know about it really! If you want to keep it cheap then dry sumping is probably going to get it too expensive?
