Any one give me a estimate ? standard 8v 1.9 engine making funny noises and instead of buying a new engine id rather have a rebuild. Any body in the manchester area who does this at a reasonable price??

How many miles on the car? Where's the noise coming from, what does it sound like and when does it do it? Might not need a rebuild.....

This will be way more than buying a new engine. I know of a reputable breaker of rally cars selling a slightly modded 1.9 8v for £295 near to you.

Mileage unknown as the engine was from another car. I listened to it and thought the noise was coming from the pulley or close to it. The noise is constant but get louder and faster with acceleration/ revs!

Would prefer not to rebuild obviously. any more help would be great.

Im going to whip the head off today anyways. does anybody know the torque settings and orders to undo and redo the head bolts?

Thanks again Mike

Runs from the cam Belt at the Lower Rear of the engine sounds to be most likely the Water pump or tentioner as most internal problems will be an apparant knocking noise a certain rev's

It could also be the alternator making a noise, bearing failure

just thought i would add this for u not to over see it.

What condition is the rest of the engine like? to give an indication of possible milage.

cheers

Its all great replacing random parts you think might be the problem but if it doesn't solve it then its a bit of a waste, take 10-15 minutes looking at the problem find out exactly what is it then replace that one part. If you can find the specific fault then ask for advise on here, what kind of noise is it!? grinding, sqeeling? etc...

Not having a go just trying to help :o

Headbolts if your going to be doing headgasket, might be worth getting some instant gasket aswell. (not for the head gasket before any one says, water pump :))

With the engine running try moving the cam belt guard, i've come across a couple which have cracked and moved enough to rub on the pully. If the cam belt tensioner is failing the belt usually starts to run off the pully slightly, which may cause it to catch.

Cheers mate! I will take the cover off later and check that! Emgine is reasonably tappety as well. Do the headgasket and the cam belt / tentioner / water pump all for pease of mine. Give it a bloody good service and we are on our way there . Just ordered all the bits to do the body work with! paint primer sand paper filler etc!
